Artist Willard Wigan: Micro-Sculptures

2007-06-22-wizard.jpg

This artwork wouldn't last long in the nursery, but it sure is small, and since we tend to showcase small here at Apartment Therapy, we just had to highlight the work this artist is doing. There doesn't seem to be a picture online of the dollhouse, but Williard Wigan has sculpted a dollhouse the size of a human blood cell. Above is his version of The Wizard of Oz- sitting in a pin. All of his artwork must be viewed under a microscope.

We saw this story on ABC News the other night, and have been talking about it ever since. No, you can't decorate your child's room with these- but you certainly can inspire them with the story...

Here's his version of Snow White.

Willard Wigan really does have an inspiring story. He has learning disabilities and can't read or write. So...he makes microscopic art- sculpting a grain of rice or sugar with tiny handmade tools, and painting them with the hair of a housefly. His collection recently sold for $20 million.

Wigan's said, "The teachers at school made me feel small, so they made me feel like nothing. I'm trying to prove to the world that nothing doesn't exist." Now, that's a great lesson for kids.
