Nushka Dolls by Melissa Gardner

Brisbane, Australia-based artist Melissa Gardner felt the world needed more handpainted (and fewer mass produced) "goodies." Painted with acrylic-based paints and finished with a glossy varnish, the wooden Nushkas recall Russia's late 1800s nesting dolls, which have been called by many names:

Matryoshka, matrioshka, matryoshkas, babushka dolls, babushka's doll, matroshka, matryushka, and stacking dolls. Melissa coined her own word, Nushka, as a combo of "New" and "Babushka" -- a way of "connecting back to its traditional background, yet with a modern edge," like Melissa's paintings themselves.

Each limited edition design has its own Russian name; click here to see the continually updated selection and for info on delivery times and costs. Gardner will also discuss and honor custom designs. Stateside, you can find Nushka's at Gardner's Etsy shop.
