Shopping Guide: Cotton and linen by the yard for DIY projects

As we kick off How-To Month on Ohdeedoh, we thought we'd start with some sources for fabrics. Whether you're tackling a simple sewing project like a pillow or a more complicated one like a crib sheet, here are 10 places to shop for supplies.

Finn Style (Minneapolis/Online): Minneapolis shop FinnStyle is an online and in-person resource for all things Finnish and modern, including Marimekko's line of bright childrens' fabrics, like the ones shown above, priced at $36-$150 for repeats of 1-3 yards.

Reprodepot (Online): The great selection of well-priced, vintage-inspired fabric features an entire selection of cowboy textiles, Japanese imports, Marimekko, and even ribbon and trim. The Apple Pie Party cotton fabric shown is $6.95/yard.

Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts (Various Locations/Online): They have fabric for crafts and clothing, highly durable upholstery options, and a series of designer fabrics that you can special order. Their children's selection is big; the Pink Monkey Vine cotton fabric shown is on sale for $6/yard.

Nursery Fabrics (Online): Created in 2007, Nursery Fabrics is a family-owned business operated by husband and wife team Derick and Daphne Schultz. According to the Web site, their mission is, "to provide beautiful high quality fabrics at a reasonable price while providing excellent customer service." The Melon Floral and Melon Stripe cotton fabrics shown are $11/yard.

Purl Soho (New York/Online): Started in 2002 by Joelle and Jennifer Hoverson, Purl Soho has grown into sort of a household name among the crafty set, with lots of designer options for nursery fabrics. This is the My Happy Garden organic cotton fabric, $17/yard.

IKEA (Various Locations/Online): Their fabric selection is inexpensive, bright, and perfect for a nursery or an older child's room. Most fabrics, like the Frederika cotton shown, run about $7/yard.

Fabric.com (Online): Among fabric junkies, they're known as a go-to source for designer fabrics at discount prices. The Bubbles Citrus cotton fabric is $8/yard.

Maine Cottage (Various Locations/Online): Maine Cottage has good selection of colorful upholstery fabrics that can be ordered off the bolt. The Hotty Dotty cotton/linen fabric shown above is $50/yard.

FabricGuru.com: There's an extensive selection of traditional prints, less in the way of contemporary fabrics, and tons of upholstery basics and kids' designs. The I Heart You cotton drapery fabric shown is $7/yard.

Olli & Lime (Online): If you're looking to infuse a room with a splash of color and some modern patterns, Olli and Lime has answered the call. They sell a small selection of their fabric patterns online, including the George cotton sateen fabric, $28/meter.
