A friend and apartment dweller recently asked us for small play kitchen suggestions for her daughter's Christmas present. We tried talking her into some DIY ideas, but she is more the DI-Buy type. If you're in the same boat, here you go - ten small play kitchens (under 31" H) so your kids can play "dorm room" and "flop house" too.
Q: We have a small apartment in SF with a nook that we use as our nursery. The only place the crib fits is by the window. We live in a building where removing or changing the blinds would affect the look of the house from the outside and our landlord would prefer us not to do that. I was thinking we could cover the blind from the inside in some way, but cannot seem to find something that would protect the baby from the window, be something she will not pull down, and also be something that would look great. Any advice?

If this isn't the cutest, cleverest thing you've seen all day, well...congratulations. Ashley put an ingenious spin on the beloved classic Mr. Potato Head. In her case, it was born out of embarrassment at the loud clanging of her children playing with the plastic version in church. But you don't need an excuse to bring one of these spuds to life in felt form.
First, who knew you could put sticky notes through the printer? Second, does your family like to countdown to Christmas, but you don't think you can get an advent calendar together today? You're wrong. If you have a computer, a printer and some sticky notes you can do it!

At $25 for the table and two chairs, Ikea's "Latt" set is surely a good deal but perhaps a bit bland. If you want to avoid turning your home into an Ikea showroom, break open the paint and stains to create something eye-grabbing and distinctive.
Q: I have been on a mission for two months to find a comfortable nursing chair for baby #2. Now that I know how many hours are logged while seated (nursing, holding, rocking) I am determined to get a chair that fits me like a glove. Although there are beautiful chairs online, I am not willing to buy anything that I have not tried out in person...so I turn to my local furniture store and find this not-handsome-at-all but so wonderfully cozy swivel rocker from Best.

From the looks of it, Miles had a delicious as well as beautiful birthday celebration. Christine writes: Miles turned one in October and we wanted to celebrate with bright colors and all the things that 1-year-olds love. The party was homemade from the decorations to the food (the homemade oreos were amazing!)
Communication is key to any relationship, but especially so when you add kids to the mix. And when you're sleep deprived with an infant or toddler you may experience both communication breakdowns and memory lapses - what time is the doctor's appointment? what do we need at the grocery store? your mother-in-law is visiting when?

While we certainly don't think party favors are a necessity they can be a nice way of saying "thanks for coming" and reciprocating, in a small way, the gift giving. We found five inexpensive party favors in the form of letters so each kids can have their own initial.
