Good Idea: Install New Flooring to Create a New Look

Ohdeedoh reader Kirsten (of Kirsten*Can) showed us her adorable homemade mobile a couple of weeks ago, and now she's sharing photos of her children's recently renovated playroom. The flooring needed to be pulled up and replaced, so Kirsten and her husband Aaron seized the opportunity to give the room a fresh, fun new look, featuring one of our favorite color combos: red and light blue.

Good Idea Revisited: The Snacking Table

110509-snack-station-2.jpgThis just goes to illustrate that great thinkers think alike: When Ohdeedoh reader Mandi saw our recent post about using vintage Cosco toddler seats to create a cute snacking area, she emailed us photos of her own little snacking station... which also uses two Cosco kiddie seats!

Hot or Not: Handsoaps

110409-handsoap-1.jpgHandwashing season is upon us, and what better way to get kids enthused about hygiene than with these cute and ever-so-slightly creepy handsoaps? What do you think? Adorable? Or a bit too reminiscent of disembodied doll limbs?

8 Fun Birthday Cakes

It's Party Month here at Ohdeedoh, and what better way to kick things off than with a cavalcade of cakey goodness! Sure, birthday cakes get devoured (or worn) within minutes of being presented, but that doesn't stop us from lovingly agonizing over the entire cake designing process. Here's a generous handful of photos to fire up your creativity for your next kiddie party.

Mini Tour: Dylan's Teeny-Tiny Thunderdome

Two kids enter. All kids have fun! (Actually, it's just one kid in this case, but we couldn't resist that opener.) Dylan's fabulous room (aka "The Thunderdome") answers two questions: How can you create a beautifully uncluttered nursery in a 9x12' room? And how can rockstar flames be incorporated tastefully into baby decor?

Submit Your Toddler's Science Questions!
Boing Boing

110209-science-questions.jpgThat picture right there is of my four-year-old, Sam. As adorable as he is, I'm posting it to draw your attention to our kitchen chalkboard behind him. Among other things, it serves as a place to record his many science-related questions when we don't have time to look them up right away. This list gets longer by the day, which is why I was beyond thrilled to see Boing Boing's new feature: Science Question from a Toddler.

Flickr Find: Chalkboard Wall Calendar

103009-chalkboard-calendar-1.jpgThis is a great idea that serves two purposes in one fell swoop: visually anchoring a chalkboard wall and keeping track of family events. Laura entered her kiddos' wall in last winter's February Jumpstart Contest, and we were happy to see that the wall continues to be put so beautifully to use.

Laundry Room Collections

This idea is so simple, but so beautifully executed. Flickr member tsillie hill dreams collected all the random little things she found in her children's pockets, then laid them out and photographed them. She calls the resulting photos Laundry Room Collections, aka "things in little pockets that almost went in washers."

Craigslist Makeover: Play Table and Chairs

How much are we loving this beautiful set of table and chairs? So much that we're kind of jealous that our knees would bump the underside of the table. Want a similar set for your own little ones? All you need is a twenty-dollar bill, some paint, and a bit of thrifting karma.

Good Idea: Snacking Table

102709-snacking-table.jpgWe've always harbored a huge fondness for vintage Cosco kiddie chairs, but we've never been quite sure how to make good use of them. That is, until we spotted this fantastic little setup. Two chairs plus a simple midcentury low table equals one cute-as-pie snacking station. Come on in for a closer look...

Flickr Find: Handmade Play Tent

What a fantastic idea for occupying those deep corners that are created near beds and cribs. What's even better, Kim fashioned this cozy, colorful little nook for her daughter Haley almost entirely from items she found around the house.

Inspiration: His 'n' Hers Shared Room

102609-his-n-hers-room-1.jpgWe frequently field questions about how to design for rooms shared by brothers and sisters. Ohdeedoh reader Stephanie shares a pair of photos of the room shared by her daughter Savannah and son Elliott. Above we see Elliott's side. Keep reading to see Savannah's...

Where the Wild Things Are Fort Contest
Booooooom.com

We haven't seen Where the Wild Things Are yet, but we still love the idea behind this contest. Booooooom.com challenged readers to build their own fort, just like Max does in the movie. They posted all the entries and the winners recently, and while most of them skewed toward grown-ups (AT: Boston posted their favorites here), there were a handful of family and kids' entries that won our hearts.

Tree of Life Mural

102209-tree-of-life-mural.jpgBased on an original painting by Ruth Baker, this gorgeous wall mural hangs like wallpaper, but is also re-usable. We love the juxtaposition of whimsical birds, butterflies and flowers with a subtle, sophisticated color palette.

Inspiration: Kids' Room from 1935

102209-1935-kids-room.jpgProving that good design ideas never go out of style, this 1935 ad for Armstrong floors contains some great features that we'd be mistaken to think of as fleeting trends: chalkboards, oversized maps, and the clever use of built-ins for shelving, bed and workspace. Even the boldly geometric polka-dotted upholstery is spot-on.
