Daybeds make great 'sofas' and 'reading nooks' and can turn a protected porch into a summer sleeping area, too. I just love 'em!

Has anyone been successful using a trundle bed under a west elm daybed? I love their daybeds, but i really need a pop up trundle for company. Any ideas?

Like you said, they can be easily disguised as a couch which makes them a functional choice for any room. Daybeds are a great alternative to heavy and expensive convertible couches, too.

mepemodern, we just got the ikea hemnes daybed for our guest room/playroom. They don't really adverstise this feature (or nto well), but we saw it at the store. The whole area where there are drawers pulls out (but the drawers still work), so that it becomes a king sized bed. You put two twin mattresses on it -- stack them for the day bed and spread out when it's pulled out. Our We're going to store a egg crate mattress pad in our playroom closet to make it more comfortable -- because the mattresses are thin. You could put thicker ones on it, but they get pretty high stacked when in daybed mode. A link:

We have the same hemnes daybed that egay has and it's perfect for our small space. We love that it pulls out into a king bed when company comes, and the generous drawer space means that we don't need a dresser in the room.

I have to comment about the West Elm Circle-cutout daybed. We have one in my daughter's room as a place for late night feedings or the occasional guest and have been very disappointed by the extremely poor quality of the piece. It is solid wood, but the coating chips off with almost any contact, leaving the light colored wood showing through. Combined with the mattress, the daybed is probably the most expensive item in the baby's room, and the one thing I regret buying.

I got a great daybed from crate and Barrel three years ago - I think it was called the Malamar? - but it has help up very well through multiple moves, cats, dust, etc. It has a trundle and it's even comfortable to sleep on.

The only problem is that I'm looking for a new daybed mattress cover and the pickings look to be slim. Any ideas?

In my previous studio apt I had an extremely large pass thru closet/dressing room between the main room and bathroom. I decided I wanted more living and entertainment space so I put a simple painted plywood platform with a good twin mattress in the alcove and slept there. the cost of materials, paint and mattress was less than $200. With nice linens, curtains to hide the hanging clothes and art it was a nice little space. I'm back to a 1 br but would do the same again with the right space.
