Good Question: Custom Crib Mattress

2007_12_19_Nanna Ditzel Cradle.jpg

Reader Emily writes in: My husband and I are expecting our first baby in June, and we're starting to think about getting the nursery together. A family member is lending us a gorgeous Nanna Ditzel cradle, and we're really excited to use it. The problem is that it doesn't have a mattress, and the cradle is an odd size, with a curved bottom. How do we find a mattress that fits? Can we make one out of foam and still be safe? Are there places that make custom mattresses? We'd like to avoid spending a bundle, since it'll probably only get used for a couple months. Please help us, Ohdeedoh!

Congrats on your pregnancy and for scoring a beautiful loaner cradle, Emily. There certainly are companies that make custom crib mattresses, but we don’t have direct experience with them. Below are a few links to check out.

Readers – have you purchased a custom-sized mattress and have a recommendation for Emily? Or can you think of another solution?

We had a custom mattress made for a vintage bassinet. We had our organic mattress made by

If memory serves, it was about $90 at the time.

We live in NYC, so we have easy access to the foam shops on Canal St. We had a piece of firm foam cut to size for my son's Moses basket when he was a newborn. We just traced a pattern on craft paper & took it to the shop. If you're in NYC too, then that's another option for you. IIRC, it was only $25 or so.

We had a piece of foam custom cut for the inside of an IKEA play tent, and the place that did it also made us a removable waterproof, mildew-proof fabric cover. The entire thing cost us about $70, and that was for a fairly sizable piece of foam. Maybe talk to some local foam shops and see if they provide this service?

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! Those prices are very reasonable, too. Thanks again for the help!

Monika - I just called sleeptek and they said they don't do custom. Did you order yours some time ago? I would love to get an organic mattress as well.

When I needed to find a custom mattress I bought it on the internet together with a Memory Foam Mattress. If I am not wrong you can find there organic mattresses there too. Hope my answer came in time. :)
