Didymos: Das Babytragetuch

(Welcome to Karey and Lisa, a two-mom tag team, finalists for an editor position at AT:The Nursery. Comment away.)

I would be lying if I said my favorite thing about the Didymos is that handles like a dream on crooked pavement, subway stairs, on and off the bus and in tiny stores. It does do all of those things.

It is also ergonomic, customizable and leaves me with two free hands. It is soft, organic and manufactured in Germany to exacting fair trade standards. I love all of these things about it. But mostly, I love that it keeps my baby happily snuggled up next to me, which is extremely useful for navigating crowded streets and warding off grabby-handed strangers.

2007-04-04-didymos2.jpgThe Didymos is a long piece of cloth. That's it.
It can be ordered in six pre-set sizes or in custom lengths, and can be used to wear newborns through toddlers on your front, back, or hip. It's available in a wide range of great colorways and modernist-leaning patterns.

2007-04-04-off-roading.jpgYou can even make a hammock out of it. The supple, strong cloth is specially woven to offer just enough give to rig yourself up, yet enough structure to provide amazing back support.

In NYC, Slings in the City hosts free workshops to help you get slinging. Elsewhere, Nine in, Nine Out chapters can help you get your baby on.

Try the Didymos as a beautifully functional textile design, another tool in your kid-wrangling arsenal or as a parenting lifestyle choice.

Available in NYC from slingzilla.com and elsewhere at various retailers including didymos.com, attachedtobaby.com and birdiesroom.com.

The For Sale or Trade board at thebabywearer.com is also great--I love a used woven wrap because they get so soft and luxurious with use.

I appreciate that you love your Didymos, but are you so paranoid that one of your favorite features is that it helps you protect your baby from "grabby-handed strangers"?

Personally I don't mind grabby-handed strangers. I do mind what strangers might have in their hands (lit cigarettes, hot cups of coffee, carelessly swinging bags) or might NOT have in their hands (the leash to a questionable dog for example). When you're wearing your baby, these dangers are not even on the radar.

Having survived NYC as a completely single mom, wearing baby (in ring slings, pocket slings, mei tais, and wraps) pretty much every day from the age of 1 week to 2.5 years, I just can't say enough good things about babywearing, and can't imagine how I would have done it any other way.

since a sling is basically a few yards of fabric, you could probably make one in less than an hour...

thanks all for the feedback. its great to see interest in slings and things. babywearing has kinda grown from an experiment to something central to our parenting style.

we seem to have an ever growing wardrobe of carrier gear. the didymos just happens to be our favorite at the moment - its so well designed for, yes, what is basically just fabric!

we do also have a moby wrap, which we found great for the newborn months. the didymos is a little sturdier for later, heavier baby months. we have a couple pouch style carriers too, which are easier for quick baby in/baby out moves. lisa also recently had a ring sling made in solarveil fabric for the summer.

p.s. - the 'grabby hands' phrase was used mostly in jest.
