Blogging NPR: Honey, I Exported the Kids

Would you pick up and move your family to China? That's exactly what Alan Paul and his family- including three young children, did two and a half years ago.

It was a great offer for a position with the Wall Street Journal for Paul's wife that motivated the move from the suburbs of New York to Beijing. You can listen or read the article here.

We've personally never been that good at adapting, but it does sound like a once in a lifetime experience. Would you do it?

Friends of ours moved with their 2 children to China 2.5 years ago. Heck, just about everyone we know has lived overseas with young children -- Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, China, Italy, France, Gabon... Actually, I am writing this from a foreign country my husband moved us to last year with our 2 young 'uns...

I would do it in a heartbeat. My husband & I are still trying to figure out how we can move to Bangkok... or Australia... or Cape Town and make a decent living...

I read the blog of a couple that moved to China with their two year old (at http://cubiclemuses.com/pg/). I think they're very brave, but it does make me want to do it too :)

Definitely do it! What a great learning experience for the children! Most kids here in the USA do not have a broad cultural view. I think if done carefully and well, it could have great benefits for generations to come.

When my dad was on sabbatical, my family lived where ever he went to work with colleagues: France, Japan, England. It was a wonderful experience as a child and definitely changed my perceptions. I recently had the opportunity to move to Barcelona (cruelly taken away from me at the last minute, sadly) and remembered all the excitement and trepidation I had as a kid before moving to another country where people spoke another language.

Heck yeah, we'd do it! We moved to Guam once but had to come back for medical reasons. Hopefully there will be another chance to live overseas in our future.
