Swaddling has been growing in popularity - but could the way you're swaddling be harmful to your baby? The New York Times Well Blog warns that it might.
.Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, has been looking into whether swaddling can hinder hip development and contribute to hip dysplasia. Some studies have shown that swaddling a baby can reduce crying and lengthen sleeping, but Pediatrics is stressing that there are right and wrong swaddling techniques. “Although we appreciate that swaddling may sometimes be an effective technique to decrease crying and promote sleep in newborns, there is a concern that it may lead to an increase in hip dysplasia.'’
The message is that parents should learn the right way to swaddle (leaving ample room for baby's legs for example) either by learning from their pediatrician, a reputable book or video.

i completely agree with the article. i was a huge proponent of the karp method - it did wonders for our baby! but you have to make sure you get it right!

I second the Miracle Blanket. A must have. It just wraps around above the waist, hopefully preventing these suspected hip problems. Also, when their legs get too long for the leg pouch, you just leave their legs hang out.

We used the fleece Kiddopotomus SwaddleMe with great success. Hip displaysia was not an issue, the leg pouch was plenty big enough for baby's legs.
