Our mom could already run a thrift store out of her basement, and once we had a child, she's slowly been bringing it over- starting with our old baby toys! So, the last thing we want to do is add to that clutter at Christmas.

Rookie Moms has some great ideas for completely clutter-free gifts including one we've been looking into- walking tours in your city. Other ideas include event tickets, restaurant discounts/gift certificates or a family portrait session.
You can also give of yourself. For example, I'm thinking of helping my parents paint a room that they just haven't gotten to, or giving my mom a pedicure with my own two hands.
Other ideas for clutter-free grandparent gifts? Great list, Rookie Moms!
one year for Mother's Day I removed the wallpaper in my mom's kitchen and dining room and then painted. It was not so bad, because she has a very small home.

The marquie (sp)! My brother married in a small town that had a run down theater. Trying to raise funds they rented out the marquie. The money went to fixing the place up. Of course I put "Just married"...both of there names with the same last name!!!!
Movie certificates seem to be a great hit with young and old.

LOL! My Mom tends to bring over clutter & "dime store toys" too! This yr. she took the kids & I (hubby was on a business trip) to the Gaylord Hotel for Christmas on the Potomac. We had so much fun! Making memories is way more fun than clutter!

We get suitcases full of the clothes I wore as a child from my mom. There is a lot of polyester and plaid, but also the occasional gem (like the velvet Swiss dirndl I wore at 2, or the lace bonnet from 5 generations back). When any of the many pack rats in our midst give us "heirloom clothing," we pick out the best ones, then take photos of our daughter in them, and those photos then become Christmas gifts for the people who gave us the item. It has been a huge success.
Another way to help mom with clutter: when my mom asks me for a wish list each Christmas, I give her a list of things that she can dig out of her own attic or basement (old family photos, pieces of silver, books, etc.) I figure I get cool stuff and she gets rid of the clutter that just sits in boxes anyway. No money spent either.

Make a photo slide show of the grandkids. Many digital scrapbooking programs have the slide show option, for computer or tv.

For a friend of mine who was recovering from surgery just last week, all us friends got togethere and did a big clean of her house (she was delighted) and we're going to help her de-clutter after Christmas, she's been in bad health all year so her home was a little neglected
One year I brought a car trunk load of fuel/bags of coal over to a neighbour as a thank you present for a favour she did for me. She didn't own a car so it was very practical.
A lottery ticket
