We love poems. We've also found poetry a great way to get younger kids interested in reading and writing. Poetry can be more inviting and less intimidating than traditional forms of writing, and we've gotten great responses from kids in the past. So, to help you take advantage of National Poetry Month, we have gathered a few resources for you. Yes, Shel Silverstein is still a great choice, but there are plenty of others as well...
The Academy of American Poets website has a wealth of resources for teachers, parents, or anyone wanting to experience this concentrated form of writing. A great resource to start with can be purchased in their store: "Poetry Speaks to Children". The hardcover book comes with the perfect collection of poems for kids ages 6 and up. And...there's a CD with 52 of the poems read aloud, most of them read by the author.
Over at Poetry Alive , we also found a great list of anthologies and books to get your kids interested in poetry including "Poems to Read to the Very Young".
While you're at Poets.org, check out the poems for birth and parenting. Or Adopt a Poet with your kids. Won't they feel special to know they have their very own poet!
