Baby Names and Bullying

071309babynames.jpgJust a little something fun for your Monday afternoon...everyone does it- when you're going through those lists of baby names, you're always trying to think of ways the kid could be made fun of if you chose that name. One website actually lets you see how others with the name were bullied...

Just head over to Nickelodeon's Parents Connect site and click on the tab "Considering the Name" once you've gotten to your chosen name. A bunch of people will tell you exactly how it was to live with that name. Mean kids can be very clever- we were surprised by some of the stuff they came up with!

Don't feel silly! First, enter a name. Then when the name comes up- you'll be in the general tab- you'll see it right above the large bold-faced name. Next to general is "Things to Consider" and then two other tabs: popularity, and similar names. Hope that helps!

My baby is already named, so I don't find it all that helpful, but I do find it a bit perplexing. My daughter's name is Aurora, and several girls with that name posted that the other kids would call her the "northern lights." If that's the worst thing kids can come up with, I think my daughter will be OK!

Let's face it, kids are cruel sometimes and will find a way to poke fun at ANYthing... hopefully my boys will be kind and generous and have a healthy self-esteem so it'll all roll off their backs.

My female best friend had a silly mother who chose a very foreign MALE name for her first name. Now my friend is having all kinds of difficulty getting a job doing things she likes but are fairly gendered because of it (ie dogwalking, decorating type fo stuff) - IF she gets a callback, they're very surprised that it's a woman on the phone.
