Good Questions: A Non-Traditional Registry?

2008-02-28-baby registry.jpg
Our friend Marketa asked us this question:

I'm not sure I want to register using just one traditional store. I have been seeing different things on lots of online stores. Is there a way for me to put together my own list of gift ideas from all different sources?

I think I've seen a few places online where you can create registries like this, but I don't know which ones are trustworthy.

Thanks.

Well, we searched around, and came up with a few of the larger online registries:

Find Gift.com

My Registry.com

The Things I Want.com

Some of the sites only let you choose from the stores/websites they partner with, but The Things I Want lets you choose any store on the web.

Has anyone used an online registry like these? Is it bad etiquette to tell people exactly what you want and from where?

We used the Things I Want for our wedding registry and it was great! It's easy to use and quick to set up.

We were happy with My Registry. Using one of these sites was a great way for us to be able to point people in the direction of the online shop that had the absolute best prices on some of the items we were needing as well. Worked great!

I was gong to use one of these, but then found everything I wanted on Amazon.com. They sell stuff from many stores.

We use wishlist.com and we love it. f you download the widget, your list can be populated with a photo of the item as well as the information. You can also house several wishlists under one account.

we are expecting our first baby in early may...we registered at babies r us, and also at thethingsiwant.com...we're doing cloth diapers and want to try a bunch of different ones on on our baby girl to see which work the best for her shape and size before we really invest in our stash. there wasn't any site that offered everything we wanted, so we used thethingsiwant to gather everything in one place. so aunts and uncles and grandparents can do the in-store thing with babies r us, and our friends, siblings and cousins who are web-savvy can buy our diapers and other less-mainstream items. our shower is this saturday and my sister-in-law has been encouraging people to shop on thethingsiwant...i can't wait to see what people have chosen!

I wish these things didn't exist! Some of the stuff I picked out (and bought myself, I have an issue with registries, but I digress) turned out to be very bad choices. Some of the best stuff came from wiser moms who gave me what they found worked. If you register for absolutely everything, you may miss out on alot of great stuff that just didn't meet your aesthetic! Let other people choose things for you that they know are great, from experience. That cute diaper bag will drive you crazy if it has a black interior and you can't find a darn thing in it! The less cute one with a bright yellow interior from my sister was soooo much better.
Also, certain things are really going to depend on the preferences of your baby. I would not register for diapers, bottles, or pacifiers. I was advised to buy one of each brand and try them all to figure out which was the best and that was truly smart.

So, don't stress about the registry. Parenting is trial and error in nearly every respect. Give yourself some flexibility.

In our house we research everything to death and we didn't want a lot of the mainstream goods at traditional stores. We ended up using myregistry.com and although a lot of people did buy the items that we registered for, they did use it as a guideline to buy similar products that they were able to find locally. The result was that for the most part we received useful stuff that was natural, organic or not a bunch of plastic, plastic, plastic!

We've been really happy with modernminiregistry.com for the ability to post pictures and mark items purchased.

We registered for wedding things a few years back on http://felicite.com/ and really loved all the options they offered. There are tons of sites to choose from for baby stuff, too, (organic, etc..) and were thrilled with the service (cash credits, picture postings and links to the stores). I'd highly recommend them.

I just read about this http://www.alternativegiftregistry.org/ on my friends blog. It's what she's using. She even listed home made freezer meals as one of her gifts.

Try Kaboodle. It's so easy to use. The only problem is if you purchase an item from someone's list, you have to manually mark it as "reserved." Otherwise, I love it.

I second the previous comment about Kaboodle. I have the same drawback that people have to remember to hit "reserve this gift", but otherwise, it's great because you can choose things from all over the internet and yet folks can still buy the item at their store of choice (or in my case,I encourage second hand items and their own cast offs) because they just have to tell others they have "reserved" it.
