We're huge fans of Amy Butler's fabrics and sewing patterns and we know many of you share our affection (here and here for example). Every once in a while Amy offers free project downloads on her website and we thought you'd be interested in one of her latest: (no-sew) silhouettes made from her Nigella fabric line. As if this weren't enough of a treat, we just learned that she has a book in the works focused on sewing projects for children. Well, knock us over with a feather!

The PDF download (third from top) contains silhouette patterns you can cut out of fabric of a bird, rooster and butterfly as well as instructions for how to mount them to canvas. Make yours big or small or applique them onto pillows, bedding, towels or clothes.

There's a terrific interview with Amy about starting her business and maintaining creativity at Craft Boom which is well worth a read if you're a fan. The juiciest tidbit in the interview is news of her forthcoming book, Little Stitches for Little Ones, from Chronicle Books. The diaper holder above is one project - see Craft Boom for more. The book is slated for release in September and you can bet we'll remind you again in the fall.
Count me among the AB fans. Every one of her fabrics is magical.
Our house is very simply decorated. Museum-white walls. Dark stained hardwoods.
The plan is to continue adding punches of color via art and rugs and fabrics. Ms. Butler is helping us out in that department, starting with these curtains I made to hide a built-in dresser in our bedroom (second photo in post, obviously).

Can't wait for the baby book--how exciting. I write a monthly craft column for our local newspaper and my next topic is a roundup of homemade gift ideas for young children (versus gifts you can buy). I have a few standbys I make, but would love to get other suggestions. Please drop in, everybody ... http://pennycarnival.typepad.com/penny_carnival/2008/05/handmade-gift-i.html
