Poetry in a Suitcase

We're pretty sure our own love of poetry began in the first grade when our teacher read Shel Silverstein aloud to the class. It led us to the library shelves to find more poems. This poetry suitcase is another great way to pique a child's interest in poetry and hopefully, the beauty of words.

Minerva started by buying a cheap cardboard suitcase which she then let her kids help her decorate with their own artwork.

Then, she went through some of their poetry books and found objects to match the poems. Each object got tied to a poem and placed in the suitcase.

Believe it or not, Minerva says her kids read poems for about 90 minutes, a 22 month old, and a three year old!

Read the details on how to make the poetry suitcase and Minerva's full report on the results here.

I absolutey LOVE this idea! I sat down with a Shel Silverstein book with my 3 boys (8,6 and 3) one night this week when they were being crazy. They really calmed down while listening and I had to cut them off for bedtime. I will definitely try this idea...we have so many little toys and trinkets around the house, it will be fun to put together.
