Starting a Collection

081009collection.jpgAny strange or unique kid collections out there? From coins to beer bottle caps, we enjoyed collecting as a kid. Collecting seems to be such a natural inclination for children, and it's also such a great way to encourage learning in the home. The Smithsonian has a nice guide to get you started...

The Smithsonian Guide explains the value of collecting, and gives kids ideas on what they might collect.

Not only is the collecting part educational, but some of those collections can make a really nice design element. (See our previous post on Displaying Collections from Cookie Magazine)

Do your kids have a collection?

when i was a little girl i collected castles. any type of figurine that was castle shaped. they were all cheap and silly and as a teenager i decided they were stupid, but my mom saved them all anyway. since the invention of facebook i've reconnected with all these old friends who ask me about my castle collection now...i cant wait to give them to my daughter :)

My almost 4-year-old daughter collects any natural object she can get her hands on--leaves, sticks, rocks, sycamore bark, sea shells, pine cones. We do leaf rubbings, which she loves, and display her collections on a shelf. I've been looking for more ideas, though, so this will help!

We have a feather collection, very similarly displayed as the one here. Feathers gross me out, but my kids adore collecting them - I put them in the freezer to kill lurking germs.
