If we appear a little bleary-eyed today it's because we stayed up too late reading The Creative Family by Amanda Soule. If you're a reader of her blog, Soule Mama, you won't be a bit surprised to find the same kind of thoughtful, reflective writing and simple, creative project ideas in her book.
We were surprised, and encouraged, to read in her introduction that for a long time Amanda didn't consider herself a creative person which she linked to possessing a level of inherent artistic talent. Over time and through her children, she began to nurture and explore her own creativity and develop a wider definition of what it means to be creative as well as a broader self-perception of her own creative spirit. (We can really relate to this.) She writes beautifully about the importance of nurturing your children's creative lives and provides ideas and projects for things to make and do as a family that will feed your family's creative soul.
Rather than describe each chapter to you, there's a nice summary on the back of the book to give you an idea of the content:
In The Creative Family you'll learn how to:
- Have more fun with fewer toys
- Create unique works of art to display, share and give
- Share the tradition of handmade crafts
- Explore the wonders of nature with your children
- Make every holiday handmade
Connect as a family through everyday celebrations
You can find The Creative Family at any good bookstore or order it online. We also encourage a visit to the Soule Mama blog.

I hate to be the party pooper, but I was a bit disappointed with the book. I think it's an inspiration for parents who aren't already living the "creative" life. However, I found many of the ideas to be the sorts of things my family already does. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it. I just wish I had checked it out of the library instead of purchasing it!
