"Things to Hide When Company Comes Over"

052609messyhouse.jpg
OK, maybe it's not this bad, but we all have a few things we have to toss in the closet, in the hamper, or some other hiding spot when people come over. And once you become a parent, that list becomes a little longer, and sometimes a bit humorous. Here are a few items from one list we found...familiar or not?

• Parenting for Dummies and The Idiot's Guide to Parenting
• The pacifier your six-year-old still uses
• Pile of wet laundry that reeks of mildew from sitting for five days (maybe just run it through the washer again)
• The math homework you helped your sixth grader do that has a “D” clearly marked in red
• 14 cans of Spaghetti O’s marked “Dinner Monday, Dinner Tuesday, Dinner Wednesday ...”
• Residual goo in the microwave from a tomato soup explosion

Do you need to hide anything in your home? Or do you let guests see things as they truly are?

Visit MOPS for the complete list.

Okay, that list is funny.

No, I don't hide stuff because my house isn't a wreck, and among my true friends, nothing like that is a problem anyway. Their fridges are full of splats, and I don't care.

Clothes, shoes, coats, etc. are the first things to be put away when I know people are coming over.

I'm HORRIBLE about putting those things away when I'm done with them and tend to just put them wherever I am.

I tend to hide my copy of Babywise, even though we don't really use it. It has that love it or hate it quality and I don't want the fact that I own the book to put me in a "she's THAT kind of parent" box.

P.S. My guests don't go rummaging through my drawers anyway. See, we keep our porn and sex toys safe.

I'll dust if guests are coming over. I almost always put things away when I'm done with them (and have taught my spouse to do the same), so we don't have any clutter. Our problem areas are sometimes dishes and dust/streaks, but those only take 10-15 minutes to address.

I used to hide our drugs and porn, but we don't get into those too often any more.. lol

And... I'd like to add that keeping tidy is a habit developed over a lifetime. I still have to remind myself to put things away; it isn't automatic for a lot of items. What makes it somewhat easier for me is that I've realized taking the extra ten seconds to do it right will save me hours of labor later. It's so worth it. My house is the tidiest of all of my close friends and none of them have children... I don't think having kids has to make a house dirtier.

It's usually that bad at our house.

I put away everything that isn't in it's place in the living room.

I wipe down or lightly clean the bathroom.

Same for kitchen counters.

If it's my parents or in-laws, it's usually a three day preparation.

I totally have to run and hide my bras...I'm nursing my little one (4 months) and often it's easier to just tear off the bra rather than fiddle with funny clasps for the part that slips down etc. And then afterwards I get often busy playing with my older daughter and forget to put them away.

I hide EVERYTHING. :)
My husband makes fun of me and tells me that people know we live in our apartment, it's ok if every magazine isn't stacked, our camera case isn't hidden in a cabinet, or there's a comb on the bathroom counter.

I wish my biggest problem was dust/streaks. But, unfortunately I have a lot to work on!

Unless it's my sisters, mother or close girlfriends, I hide the breastpump/accessories. Just seeing the parts drying in the kitchen makes some people uncomfortable.
