Look! Maeve's Crib in Production

Do you remember Maeve's crib from last summer? Estimated price aside, we all seemed to agree that it was pretty stunning. Well, we just noticed on Yokiddo that it went into production.

As you may recall, father Jeffrey Taras, an architect and a partner in Brooklyn-based 4-pli, designed, researched and built this crib for his daughter, Maeve. With its gentle curves and plump ends, Maeve's crib is round and playful like its namesake. Designed as an antidote to today's slab-sided crib offerings, Maeve's crib will cosset your child well into her toddler years.

Maeve's Crib is a limited edition - only 250 were made. It was even featured in Architectural Record. Selling for £ 1700.00, the crib is available from Bouf. You can also contact 4-pli for more information. We know, we know - that's a lot of money. Here's what Jeffrey had to say about the price in comments from the original post:

The price is undoubtedly high relative to other cribs, high enough that I couldn't afford to buy one at retail, but allow me to offer a few reasons.

First, it's made here in Brooklyn, NY, which may or may not be a benefit to you, but it means we pay US labor rates, create jobs here in our neighborhood, and buy materials from local suppliers. Most of the other cribs on the market are made in factories in China or Eastern Europe.

Let's also remember that this is indeed a limited-edition artisan piece. We don't have a factory with thirty people turning out this crib. It's laborious to make (close to 40 man-hours in each one), finely made, and built to last.

When people are paying $1,500 for purse and a few hundred dollars on a pair of jeans, it doesn't seem unreasonable to me to offer a unique, hand-crafted and enduring piece of furniture for $3,500.

For most of us the price far exceeds what we can afford or would be willing to pay for a crib, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate and admire it from afar. We're here to highlight good design at all price points.

yeah it's cute.... but the price is ridiculous.... I personally do NOT spend a couple hundred on jeans, nor over 1k on a purse.... A crib IS only used for a couple years.... it's not like forking out major cash for a dining table that will be used for 30 years.

I'm pushing all the cost rationalizations aside.... I believe those comments are a bit out of touch with a good portion of your readers.....
