Reader Project: Building the Better Crib

090409-better-crib-1.jpgWhen Ohdeedoh reader Michelle found out she was expecting her first child, her husband, a designer by trade, set about building the better crib. Using social media tools, he polled parents to hear what they have to say about conventional crib designs. After much planning, sketching and re-polling, he executed his final design. Keep reading to see how he resolved the number one beef most parents have with standard cribs...

090409-better-crib-3.jpg090409-better-crib-2.jpgIt's a problem we can totally relate to: changing those persnickety crib sheets! Here, that problem is neatly resolved by having the mattress pull out on a drawer for easy access. In addition, this ingenious design includes extra storage and beautiful bamboo slats, all on a wheeled base for even more convenience.

Read about the entire process here, then here.

If you're intrigued by this crib design, you should know that Michelle's husband is considering the possibility of creating more of these in the future.

There's a crib on the market with a door on the short end that opens so you can slide the mattress right out. I think it was fairly expensive, though.

How does the drawer on this crib stay closed? There has to be some sort of latch or it wouldn't be safe. It's an interesting idea, and would be an attractive crib if the sides had been finished in some way.

Oh my GOODNESS, that is incredible! That man is a genius and even better for actually creating his genius design.

There is nothing I hate more than changing crib sheets. I used to make my husband do it, because I could not do it without swearing.

This is beautiful. Beautiful.

interesting, but it's really not that hard to lift the mattress out.

Before I clicked through I thought to myself, gee what did I find annoying about my crib, and couldn't come up with anything (its been a little while) and the second I saw that mattress slide out I thought, omg friggin' GENIUS. Because standupstapler is totally right. There's no changing those sheets without a few choice words. Especially at two in the morning! Awesome job.

It's only hard for you short armed mamas.
Baby strollers made to be pushed by midgets (in my pushing days, that's all that there were) were the curse of my life and downfall of my back.

um. yes. it is hard to lift the mattress out when you are only five foot. He could seriously make a fortune selling these and I hope he does. Beautiful work!

Huh - can honestly say, it has never occurred to me that changing crib sheets is annoying. I probably wouldn't use that feature. But it is a cool looking crib!

Hmm...is the mattress always at the lowest height, then? As a shorter mom, I always found it much more difficult to lay down a sleeping baby when the mattress was so low then just pulling the mattress out to change the sheet.

My concern would be how safe that gap between the drawer and the slats will be with the weight of a young toddler standing up on the mattress. I looks like there is space for the childs leg to slip through. That is a potential for a broken leg. I know that most kiddos stand right on the edge of the mattress and jump on it.

I don't think you can use just any old plywood for a crib. Those things offgas.
