A good solution for too-small-for-furniture entry areas is the Slatrack by Wallter. A wall-hung version of the "landing strip" it provides a place to hang stuff (jackets, bags, keys, helmet) and to stash your incoming and outgoing mail (there is a shelf behind the slats). It doesn't take up precious floor space, and it is sculptural and colorful, making it a worthwhile decorative addition even when it is not in use.
