Good Questions: Mobile to Match Baby Bedding

2008-08-29-gapbedding.jpg

Hey everybody, let's help Paige out with her Good Question:

I'm having trouble finding a mobile for my daughter's nursery. We're using this BabyGap "Flower Shop" bedding [pictured above], but I can't seem to find anything that is equally whimsical and sophisticated.
I don't want one that is too froo froo or too cutesy. Basically, I want a mobile that will match the aesthetics of the room - pinks and deep espresso brown, but will also entertain baby. Do you have any suggestions for cool, unusual mobiles?

Hi Paige. The first thing that came to mind when we saw the bedding you're using was the mobile below by Laura of The Scoop - so creating something yourself is always an option.

Etsy seller Quiltbaby makes mobiles (in addition to baby quilts) and this one below in pink, brown and white fits the bill ($48). 2008-08-29-quiltbaby.jpg

We'd also suggest taking a look at Julie Frith's mobiles. There are lots of modern designs and configurations to choose from and, best of all, you can choose your own colors for each "petal." The mobiles are made from stainless steel with either plastic or foam "petals."

So, astute readers, have you come across any mobiles in your travels that Paige should consider?

We also made our own out of the picture hanger mobile at top. We outfitted it with origami cranes made out of various colored paper.

Baby wouldn't be able to see the pictures from the Laura of The Scoop mobile if she's laying underneath.

Oh I think the Flensted Butterflies Mobile would look very serene in your room - I love the pinks and browns!!

I'm getting the Flenstead Butterflies Mobile for my daughter's nursery. It's very pretty. I'm also a big fan of Flenstead mobiles. The one with the wood fish might also look good--you could paint the fish any color.

I side with Shawn... I just made a mobile from origami cranes and floral wire - so far my 7 month old is mesmerized by all those little fluttering birds (me too). Bonus was that it was surprisingly easy to make.

Two of my great friends have the bird mobile below. It's whimsical and sophisticated and well-made.

Here is my idea (click the word mobile for image) for a mobile, it is called "Re-Mo", handmade by Julie Frith. You can custom color this to be white, brown and pink...or just all white. I like it white. It is very elegant.

But don't very young babies need high contrast images? All white might look good, but not do much for the kid.
And after 5 months, they start to respond to more complex shapes and patterns

High contrast mobiles encourage newborns to exercise developmental skills such as pattern recognition, eye/hand coordination, gross motor activity, and a sense of object permanence. High contrast mobiles also give infants experiences with cause and effect relationships.
