Studio D Sharp: Crowning Achievement

(Hello to Megan, one of four bloggers trying out for a spot on the Ohdeedoh editorial team. Comments welcome!)

2008-05-30-crown.jpgWhen it comes to feeling special, few things beat the boost kids get when they put on a crown.Portland, Ore., artist Denise Sharp’s birthday-themed crowns might just send your little one over the top. She handcrafts the tiaras using vintage sheet music and decorative paper, giving each creation a unique and antique look.

We think that’s fantastique!

Through her company, Studio d Sharp, Denise also makes adult-sized crowns, wedding-cake toppers, and candy containers shaped like the Eiffel Tower and other landmarks.

Like so many creative businesses today, Sharp’s foray into making paper crafts started at home. She was hosting a birthday brunch for her husband and son, and needed a way to make a table for 20 look festive. So she made each guest a crown, and it became an instant hit.

Very cool. When I found them quite a few months ago I thought it would be perfect until I remembered my soon-to-be-one-year-old would eat it. If only the paper creation weren't paper? I keep thinking how great a more "re-usable" version would be...

These are fun fun fun! I've been wracking my brain about my daughter's upcoming fourth birthday. I think we've settled on an art party theme, and I can see how one of these gorgeous creations would fit in. Maybe as one of the projects I can let the guests have a go at making their own ...

Oh, oh. How fun to see comments, and even from people I don't know. Thanks, guys.
Carolyn--a friend of mine did an art party for her daughter's b'day. It was a lot of fun. At the beginning of the party, as the kids were creating masterpieces, someone went around and took photos of everyone. Then, during cake and presents, the grandma went in a back room and framed the kids' artwork along with photos of them hard at work. That became the party favor everyone took home.

Love the glitter filigree tiara on her website. It would be perfect for the birthday girl....young or old!

I came across these when I was planning my wedding a year ago. The cake toppers are lovely, they just weren't in our budget! But maybe in September 2009 I'll be ordering a first birthday tiara for my baby daughter. :)

Every birthday girl deserves a tiara! My daughter turns two this summer and I know she would totally dig this. Thanks for the helpful information!

THese are beautiful. Love how my hometown keeps appearing in the new posts (PDX). We need a PDX based AT blogger.

Well, I don't live in PDX anymore, but I spent most of my 20s there (when an apartment on NW 23rd was somewhat affordable) and I visit often to get my fix. I've bounced between there and Boston, and I'm back in the Northwest now.
The creativity coming out of Portland makes my heart patter. I keep meaning to plan a trip around this: www.craftywonderland.com.
Denise's crowns and other paper art are amazing. I featured them a couple of years ago in a magazine I was editor of (sorry. Of which I was editor. I noticed some attention to grammar on previous posts). And the little boy (her son? I'm not sure) in the photo kills me.

Those are really great. I like the first two more handmade-looking ones a lot better than the last one (which screams "store-bought scrapbooking crap.")

I love these! My daughter turns 3 next a week from Monday so I doubt I can get one in time, but I'll be sure to remember them for next year. I actually live in PDX so it's great to see something local. I also love the many uses for these...the fact that she does cake toppers, etc, is so neat. Thanks, Megan, for finding and writing about them. This is my favorite blog so far...the book and the children's store in the mall just didn't do much for me, sorry.

Go, Megan!

Thanks, Flickchick. I worried about the blur, too, but I hoped that paired with the still shots people would get a good idea of the crowns. Plus, I know firsthand how hard it is to photograph a 2 year old!
Those photos were courtesy of the company. If you'd like to see some of my photography, check out my flickr page. http://www.flickr.com/photos/25361557@N05/

um...while I love the writing and the pictures, seriously, spending money on a handmade PAPER crown for a toddler? Out of VINTAGE sheet music??? It will be destroyed in a matter of seconds and wouldn't they have more fun making their own? The whole thing seems like a waste of money!

**FULL DISCLOSURE** I have known Megan for almost 16 years and think she is fabulous so forgive me if I sound a bit pollyanna regarding her ideas and her writing. I will also say that I was directed to AT recently and only joined a short time ago. I am enjoying the site immensely even though I am the mom of a little girl who has a room that would never make it on to the pages of this site. : )

I find that Megan's writing and creativity can't be beat and I'm pleased that many of you agree. I know, I know, I'm biased! I am also pleased that many of you are writing thoughtful posts here, even those who find some criticisms with the idea presented. I would definitely follow up on Megan's suggestion to check out her blog at www.pennycarnival.typepad.com so that you can get an even better idea of who she is, what types of stories interest her, and her writing style. Her writing and photography are a wonderful link to what it is like to be a mom and I find myself checking each day to see if there is a new post for me to enjoy.

Some of the comments on the blogs up for consideration are getting a little much for me so, again, I would like to be very open and honest about my relationship with Megan. That said, I hope that everyone enjoys the blog contest process. I am sure that each one of the four "contestants" will have some hits as well as some misses; however, I know that some great ideas will be shared by everyone!
