So, if you don't have the traditional mantel, where do you hang your stockings? If your home has no architectural flourishes for them, you've got to get creative.
We love the roundup of photos we found at The Inspired Room.
Hang them on your piano, stairs, bed, or an old rustic ladder. The ladder is a great idea if you really don't have any spot for them. And who says they have to be in the living area- the bedroom seems like a fun place as well. Growing up, ours were hung on a bookshelf so that's another idea. If you don't want to bother hanging them, you could even reserve a wagon or special basket to place them in.
Where do you hang your stockings?

We have a beautiful stone fireplace with ornate mantle but that's where our advent garland hangs. We have, in the past, hung the stockings on the kids' beds in hopes that it'd buy us some extra time in the morning to sleep in (Ha! No such luck!) This year I'm hanging them along the staircase.

We don't have a mantle, a staircase, or any of the fun ideas I've seen...so we're hanging them on a bookcase this year. (Not many places are out of toddler-grabbing range!)

We have a mantle and fireplace, but our soon-to-be-one-year-old would easily destroy the stockings there. So, we hang them on the wall next to our Christmas tree in the living room.

Since we don't have a mantle, I found a wrought iron stocking stand on Brylane Home. http://www.brylanehome.com/decor/Wrought-Iron-Stocking-Stand-and-Damask-and-Velvet-Stocking-Trio.aspx?PfId=15208&DeptId=18905&ProductTypeId=2&PurchaseType=0&pref=pvp
It looks great and we'll use it for years to come.

I really love the bed in the first photo - anyone know where to get one like it?
Thanks!

No fire place, no stairs. . . as kids either. Mom hung our stockings on the wall. I use our long horn skull and hang the loops over the horns.
Seeing the stocking stand "tgray99" suggested made me think of the opening above the bar ( between the kitchen and dinning area ) to hang our stockings.

We don't have stairs or a fireplace hearth either. We also have two toddlers. So, I hung them from our china cabinet. I put some fabric on top with some garland and glass vases/dishes with glass ornaments, etc. It turned out okay, but I look forward to having a better place to hang them someday!

As a warning for those with toddlers: The weighted decorative stocking holders that sit atop the mantle...be careful that your little one doesn't tug on their stocking. We have a friend who was impaled by the decorative hook that was holding his stocking. It made for a big gash on his forehead & trip to the ER. :(

my question really is: How does santa get in when you don't have a fireplace? This was a non-issue for me growing up, but now that we have a little one on the way, and live in an apartment, I don't know what we'll tell him.

Growing up- I wondered that since we didn't have one. My parents just told us he came in the door and I accepted that.

We hang ours from our beautiful antique piano. Something you could try if you don't have stairs or a fireplace like us.

Eliza-- My family lived in an apartment when I was little. My parents said they left the door unlocked for Santa since we didn't have a fireplace.

To continue with the "how-does-Santa-come-in-if-you-don't-have-a-chimney" tangent, when I was a kid, my parents found this book: http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Spurs-Santas-Smallest-Brightest/dp/0915614014. Totally helped clear things up & keep the Santa fantasy alive.
