Drawing on Furniture for "Chairity"

2009-08-chairity.jpg

We weren't sure what we thought of Pamela Bell's laissez-faire attitude toward children, markers and white couches, but this similarly decorated chair might be inching us ever so slightly toward liking this look.

Inspired by Bell's sofa, mother and daughter Judy and Jane Aldridge had the idea to raise money for the Palliative Care program at Cook's Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, TX by having the children there decorate a chair (i.e. set them loose with colored Sharpies). They bought an old chair and had it recovered in canvas. Afterwards they sealed the children's artwork with four coats of lacquer.

What do you think? Is this idea a little easier to swallow on a smaller chair than a large sofa? We love how a project like this can capture a moment in time for kids and how fun would it be pass the chair onto them when they're older?

We think this chair is utterly charming and we wish them lots of luck auctioning it off for "chairity." You can read more about this project and see in-progress photos at Judy's blog or Jane's blog.

I woould have loved this as a child. Heck I maybe even do it for my kids to draw on their own.

super cute, love it. on a chair perhaps not an entire couch. this is just the right amount of color and chair.

Is it really a good idea to seal the art and fabric with lacquer?

I actually think this is a super cute idea and would look great in the right setting. I actually love upholstering "fancy" furniture in simple canvas or cotton ducking...and if you were to do this, how cool would it be to have an antique chair that your little one decorated? the frame would last forever and you could eventually give it to them when they got their first grown-up place.
