How Sportacus Got Children to Go Outside and Play - In a world where children's entertainment devolves more and more towards the non-human and animated carbohydrate side of the spectrum, we were delighted today to read about the Icelandic children's daytime television character, Sportacus...

Played by Magnus Sheving, Sportacus lives in LazyTown, where he saves children who are "constantly tempted by sweets and sloth offered by the world’s slobbiest villain, Robbie Rotten." In the annals of parenting, this is a breath of fresh air. And if that wasn't enough, apparently children in Iceland now go to bed at 8:08pm, "because that is when Sportacus does (or else he gets grumpy and overwrought)."
LazyTown frightens me to no end...they're like clowns, only more so.
Alex, is that true!? Do say more. The article in the Times was glowing. Were we hoodwinked?
Well, I'm sure my fear of LazyTown stems from my childhood fear of clowns -- which is a whole other ball of wax -- but I dare you to watch this and not be a little ooked out and disturbed.
The guy...with THE CHIN...goodness gracious!
*shudder*
Of course, the potential freaking-out would have a better chance of being realized if I had included the link:

Duh.
I stumbled onto to this show by accident. It is disturbing! Oh, how I long for the days of Sid and Marty Krofft. Thank god, their stuff is on DVD. The added bonus, I won't have to listen to my child say, "I want that!" during commercials or be lured into buying something because of a cartoon character is on the box.
I like the show. I have a 4 year old ballerina who loves the dancing in it. Yes it is different, but that's what makes it good. If I have to see one more Japanese based cartoon, I'll scream. This show actually tells kids to go outside and play which is nice.
I looked at a few clips on Youtube. I think I like it, despite the rubber kids looking a little odd. The songs are catchy and positive and there is lots of dancing and activity that looks like fun. I can see why kids like it.
No creepier than the guy in leotards covered with internal organs (what was his name?) that was popular when I was a kid.
It would be awesome if the lazytown product tie ins were things like soccer balls, roller skates, basket balls, kayaks, swim goggles, and other activity enablers instead of dolls and clothes.

Jim, I have no idea who that is but I am INCREDIBLY INTRIGUED! I will google that one until I find out.
In the meantime, anyone else remember The Gigglesnort Hotel?

My wife remembered the name: Mr. Slim Goodbody. Interesting link... it's still on the air!
birk - thanks for posting that link, I just lost nearly an hour of my life on that site!
Spouse and I have happened upon Lazytown a few times. We are always horrified and enthralled at the same time. It's like a car crash, that show. You just can't look away. Sporticus is creepy but awesome and funny (and not necessarily in the way the creator/actor intends). If I had kids, I'd be happy with them watching the show, since it does have a good message.
Slim Goodbody. He was the one in leotards with internal organs. Let me tell you, we all thought he was great when I was a kid. So I am sure Sportacus won't have a problem at all.

No truer words! I happened upon this show one day when I was in college and I was so horrified and entertained at the same time. I immediately called my roommate into the room and we found ourselves looking up the show time and watching it every day with a gaping mouth. I got all of my friends to start watching it as well and some of us even went so far as to learn some of the songs/dances. We say it's so we can mock it, but man, it's just pure entertainment.
Those little clay kids give me the creeps. Really. My son doesn't like Lazytown much-he loves music and jumping around to music, so stuff like "Doodlebops" is more his speed. Bonus, although the repetition grates on me after awhile, the singer has a pretty decent voice that doesn't make me want to put my head under a pile of pillows.
Before I let my son watch any show- I check it out first- of course you want a great message, but make sure that you can stand the delivery method or you will go crazy quickly.
My mommy friends and I think Sportacus is kinda hot. (o:
