Food On A String: The Easy, Instant Party Game

110509-apples.jpg Now before you start shouting the dangers of the use of food in games, I'd like to say that I've played many games of this sort (under supervision) and everything has gone swimingly. In fact, they're some of my favorite memories from childhood. Lame, I know, but eating food, from a string, without using your hands...

...is just plain old fun. Seriously. You have no idea how entertaining it is until it's your turn to stand under an apple or donut with hands tied behind your back with a bandana, and attempt to get some grasp on taking nibbles at them. Think bobbing for apples, without the mess.

If the weather permits, head outside and tie up enough snacks for your whole group, or stay indoors and tie your strings to a broom and have two adults hold it out limbo style. Don't believe me that it's fun yet. Stop for a second and look up above your head to an imaginary apple on a string and then pretend to bite it. I bet you're giggling at the thought of ten 10 year olds doing it all at the same time!

Other fun snacks on a string can be something with less of a choking hazard, working well for smaller children, such as: cotton candy, marshmallows and popcorn balls. A skewer can be a big help in getting your string or yarn through your food, or simply tie it around if the shape of the food permits.

It's a typically inexpensive way to make everyone laugh and keep everyone occupied at the same time if needs be! Party on!

This is a fun idea... but really I'm just commenting to say how pleased I am to see the first person singular used in this post. SOOOO not a fan of the imperial-sounding Apartment Therapy "we." Thank you Sarah!

I have never been a fan of the traditional "bobbing for apples" even as a young child... just gross! This is a super alternative!

Wait. Someone enlighten me. Why would anyone start "shouting about the dangers of the use of food in games"???

mrslaurenleigh - There has been some prior contention about games where rapid food eating can cause choking or be unsafe.
