Meringue Ghosts and Spider Eggs

meringue_ghosts.jpgHolidays mean that kitschy foods can certainly be par for the course. What cuter way to celebrate Halloween with your children than by making these meringue ghosts found on Sunset Magazine's Web site.

For this recipe, you'll need:
• 3 large egg whites
• 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 16 to 24 miniature semisweet chocolate chips

To create these ghostly snacks, whip egg whites and cream of tartar into a stiff peaks; add vanilla; spoon the meringue into a pastry bag and pipe the meringue onto a parchment-lined baking sheet; bake for 1 1/2 hours at 200°. For the complete recipe and exact steps, visit the Sunset site.

spider_eggs_sunsetmag.jpg If meringues aren't your thing, Sunset also gives instructions on how to create some funny spider deviled eggs.

A Sunset staffer came up with the idea for these by merely cutting pitted black olives in half to create the body and cutting the other half into strips to create the spider legs.

Children will have fun helping you make these creepy eggs.

I was going to say that I'd like the ghosts better without the arms, but then, I looked twice, and realized there'd be jokes of an adult nature made about them then.
