Whenever we think about party favors, they're usually something trivial to be played with for a few hours, or if you're lucky, a few days and then forgotten about. Doomed to live out their life in the bottom of a drawer of box in the closet. Why not try to give something living instead, like your own Christmas tree?
Even though it sounds a little silly, kids love to grow things. They love knowing they're bigger than something and are the ones responsible for a plant's well being. There's always something in season, be it a cactus, pine tree or flower, your local shops should have something that fits the bill.
To top it all off, you could make cute containers for them to live in as an activity at the party. Sure, the idea of dirt flying into the birthday cake isn't an appealing one, but we're sure you could figure out a way to make it work. Even if the kids forget about the fun times they had making their pot and transferring their plant to the backyard, there's still a living keepsake for their parents of times gone by.
You can find the Christmas Tree's pictured above over at Lavish Living for $9.00.

I gave small houseplants to everyone at my son's 6th birthday... I said they were pirates desert islands. The party was a pirate theme - the loot bags were the plants with a skeleton figure sitting in the dirt, all stuffed into a clear celo bag with a couple of small candies. Most of the kids liked them, some kids were like "WHAT IS THIS?".
Personally I'm so tired of all the junk plastic loot bag crap that the kids bring home... I think the Christmas tree is great.
For next year maybe we'll do mini-terrariums, or a make-your-own mini terrareum.

That's great suewanda! Thanks for sharing! Puts a whole new spin on Shiver Me Timbers! (pirate humor is always in right?)

We gave away hand-painted pots and packets of seeds at my baby shower, and at my son's one birthday party the kids took home a craft they made. The thought of buying dollar store toys and/or candy gives me hives... it's not something I'd be all that happy to receive, so I don't want to give it away either. :)
