While we feel nostalgia for many classic Disney films, as parents a lot of those fuzzy feelings are being crowded out by their omnipresent marketing to our kids. But that doesn't mean we have to give up on our favorite fairy tale characters! We found (on Etsy, where else) some great reimaginings of favs like Snow White, Alice and Peter in affordable art prints.

i really love the next-to-last one (and everything in that etsy shop!). i like that the girl looks like an actual child, and not a dolled-up, made-up mini adult. i find that so creepy - not that all the other examples here are like that, but some are, and certainly that's a big part of my disney ick-factor.

For reading material, try Greek mythology. I had D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths as a kid, and it prepared me beautifully for reading the real stuff later (Homer et al). There's also a beautiful D'Aulaire's Norse Mythology. Both have gorgeous lithograph illustrations, and provide so many more archetypes for little kids to grab onto. I love princesses and princes, but what about goddesses and heroes, hm?

Her pieces are super charming and whimsical -everytime I see her stuff, it seems a shame that I'm not playing. (Nope, no relation or connection to her, just a big fan.)

I love alternative stories and interpretations of characters as much as the next person and these are wonderful pieces of work, however it should be pointed out that these may be a bit too serious for some kids. That one with the long neck would have probably frightened me as a young child.
