apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Finds: Bookcase Dollhouse

When we were kids a neighbor down the street had the Barbie Dream House (and the Corvette - don't get us started!). As much fun as it was to use (come on, the elevator was pretty cool), we had just as much fun throwing all the clothes off the shelves of our sister's closet to make our own Barbie "loft apartments." Now, if we'd just had a Bonde bookcase from Ikea like this gal...

When we saw this bookcase dollhouse on Flickr, any residual envy we'd had over the Dreamhouse evaporated. Creator (and Blythe collector), Sarah, even installed working lights!

Best of all, when (if) your child outgrows their dollhouse, you've got a very useful bookshelf ready for action.

(Thanks, Sarah!)

this is so very creative and cute. I've seen tons of dollhouse bookcases, but not bookcase dollhouses!

I love the furniture...is it Blythe furniture or something else? Don't see that scale often.

this is such a smart idea...but, how does a kid reach to the top levels without balancing on a chair or stool?

When I was a kid, my Barbies lived in a huge highrise (5 stories at least) made of cardboard boxes covered with wallpaper. I never thought much about it, but now that I do, it is a great idea. Yay Mom! The only downside was that it always bothered me, realist that I am, that the Barbies had no way to get between floors. If I was making one today, I would rig up some kind of pulley-elevator.

that dollhouse needs cutouts between rooms and circular staircases between floors. I acutely remember being a kid and having a dollhouse, and having these details added to the illusion that it could be a real house.

Oh my, don't I wish Bonde shelves had existed when I was a kid!

We have this exact unit in our son's room - actually two, one is a bookshelf and we turned the other on its side. Great toy storage, and a large surface at the perfect height for him to stand and play at.

This post is such an answer to prayer! My son has been quite taken with the pink and white Little Tikes or Fisher Price dollhouse, but the colors offended my husband's sensibilities. Thad loves superheroes, particularly Buzz Lightyear, Superman and Batman. I am thinking that as a family project we could make a SuperHero Lair that would provide a learning experience and hours and hours of imaginary play! Thanks!

The working lights are a big deal with my kids, to make it easier, I bought a packet of those mini push lights that are battery operated.
