Reader Tip: Alphabet Decor

ABCDecoration! AT: Nursery Reader Tara shares a great find with us that's perfect for this month's Adornment theme.

For her daughter, Tara says: My daughter is two and is beginning to learn her letters and colors. I wanted to make sure she had them around her so she could see them and absorb the information. As a teacher in training, I spend a lot of time in classrooms and am around classroom decor items all day.

It occurred to me that a brightly colored alphabet that would ordinarily hang in a classroom would be the perfect addition to her bedroom walls. I found the perfect set at a local teacher supply store and hung them in her room at her eye level. They're colorful but not obnoxious, incorporate animals corresponding to the letters and, of course, show the letters. She LOVES them! She's learned all kinds of new animals and words like yak, vulture, xylophone and fox.

We love how the brightly colored cards just pop against the green-colored wall. Thanks for the tip, Tara!

I love this idea and have been considering it for my daughter's room when we transition her to a twin bed that will be lower than her crib. Can you share what you used to hang the alphabet??

I used sticky tack to hang them. Tiny balls of it in the corners and smooshed flat adheres the cards to the wall quite well. Plus, when she's pulled a card or two down, they're not damaged, I just rehang them.

We did sticky tape at first, but then they started to fall. When we moved (and put them up again) I used fishing line and stainless steel clips (what are they called? They usually hold together a bunch of papers, instead of staples) and it's worked pretty well, though I admit I wish I'd come up with a cleaner looking solution.

At our baby shower for DS#1 our friends and family made alphabet and number cards for our son. We had a friend cut pieces of cardstock and put vinyl letters and numbers on each card. Then we provided pens, pencils, letter stencils (for words), and vinyl remnants from a sign shop for making the decorations.

Any cards that were not completed were left out when friends/family came to visit.

I intended to hang the cards on the wall like Martha did (http://tinyurl.com/29ebk6), but I was lucky enough to find some rejected custom wooden molding pieces with a small lip at the lumberyard. I stained the pieces and mounted two rows and popped the cards in between.
