Look! Miniature Garden

2009-03-miniature.jpg

We're beginning to think about gardening this summer and bemoaning the fact that our backyard is actually a "concrete jungle" best suited for container gardening which we've never felt very inspired by. Until now! Would you look at this incredible miniature garden??

We can't tell you much about it unfortunately - posted on Flickr, apparently by a neighbor, it's the handiwork of someone named John Millman. We recognize many of the natural components and the photographer has done her best to identify as many as she can: moss from the side of our building, echeveria (a type of succulent), hens&chicks, weeping rosemary, creeping thyme, a bonsai tree, a small mundo grass, kingsville boxwood, several more plants I cannot remember the names right now, black fine sand, rocks and little bamboo sticks. (See the photo on Danielle Osfalg's Flickr page where she's tagged as many of the plants as she could.)

Kids are drawn to anything miniature and so are we. This has really got the gears of our imagination turning!

Adorable...last year I stumbled across www.weegarden.com and it is amazing...teeny tiny little garden pieces that are perfect for a small container. A friend purchased some of the pieces for a garden for her daughter's birthday and I think they are perfect for creating an imaginary fairy garden.

It has a huge gallery, patio kits and all sorts of fun things. My kids and I have several planned to finish for our patio this spring.

Reminds me of the Twiddlebugs on Sesame Street that lived in Ernies's flower box. You can see the clips on YouTube.

I love this but absolutely HATE the lighting in my apartment. I had many plants when I moved here a year ago, I'm down to the one last tree that my mom had when I was four years old, and it's just about ready to die now. My windowsills aren't deep enough to hold plants and so the little natural light they get isn't enough.

How I long for and can't wait to have a home with ample natural light from every angle. To awake and go to sleep to natural light filtering in is heaven.
