Look! Using a Shoe Organizer for Container Gardening

2009-07-15-shoegarden.jpg

We previously mentioned that without a proper yard, we've taken to container gardening. If you don't even have the space for a few pots and containers, don't despair.

Check out this awesome container gardening idea - a hanging shoe organizer. How ingenious, not to mention attractive, is this idea? This is a great way to introduce your child to gardening even for apartment dwellers. Consider planting some mixed leaf salad, herbs, sorrel, peas, and mini tomatoes. Get detailed instructions here.

Blech! I find this idea ugly and far from ingenious. Anything that holds dirt can hold plants. What if I stapled a bunch of socks to my front porch and grew basil out of them? My neighbors would complain, and rightly so.

And growing vegetables in something that might leach toxic chemicals (flame retardants, etc) never intended for human consumption? GENIUS! I can't wait until all the moisture rots away the fabric or it starts growing nasty green, brown, and black mildew or roots start clawing through the fabric, turning a shoe organizer that might have lasted 5-10 years into a single-summer-then-dumpster "green" innovation.

I like it. If it's canvas there wouldn't be any chemicals to worry about and you could easily take it down and launder it when the season's over.

Or it might be good for herbs that don't need much space.

Cute!

I registered for this site with this name JUST FOR YOU monkeyknuckle! Your and idiot. With proper filtering for water and a non-bleached 100% recycled canvas for the shoe holder, (it does exist), it would work perfectly for many years. Great idea and very unique I would say! I would use some non-toxic paints to put my own touch on it. This is a great idea for apartment living. You can water the top plants and have all the water filter to the bottom, INGENIOUS!
Great Idea! Can't wait for more!
