apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Woolly Pocket Gardening Company

As our 1-year-olds (literally) ate dirt in the playground the other day a friend and I were talking about babyproofing and plants - keeping plants safe from grabby little hands and keeping young kids safe from sometimes toxic plants. He was lamenting that they had recently gotten rid of all their large floor plants and we were lamenting having to move our planters to high shelves after our son nearly knocked one onto his head. Then, we remembered seeing Woolly Pockets on ATLA last month and we realized their great potential, indoors and out, for safely combining plants and kids.

What are Woolly Pockets? The company describes them as "soft-sided nests for growing plants" - essentially, they are modular containers made of breathable felt (from recycled plastic bottles) that you hang indoors or out to create vertical gardens. You can hang them high out of reach or maximize a small outdoor space.

Vertical Woolly Wallys come in single pockets ($39 ), trios ($91) or a quintet ($193 ). They also make horizontal Wallys which would be fabulous for container gardening (remember our concrete backyard?). You can find out more at Woolly Pocket Gardening Company. (Please, please someone put these in your nursery or kid's room and and show us!)

Along these lines, did you see this excellent idea for creating a vertical garden in a shoe organizer?

These were one of my favorite things at Dwell on Design this year. The price is out of my range though so I'm thinking of ways to DIY instead. But the idea is very cool.

Love it. And so much cheaper to do than the fancy Smith & Hawken wall hangers. Great idea!

I too was thinking easy DIY but all the mud down the side of my house and how would it hold up then I read this "made of 100% recycled plastic bottles that have been industrially felted". So its not exactly wool or cotton its plastic!!! Much cleaner!
