Get Ready: The Smaller Cooler Kids' Room Contest in May

patrick041509.jpgOver on Apartment Therapy, we are in the thick of our annual search for the smallest coolest home - we've been posting lots of inspiring entries and the readers have been voting away. It's time for the Ohdeedoh readers to get in on the fun - we're getting ready to do small cool again, and this time it's family-style.
We know that just because your small space is also a family home you don't need to sacrifice style - in fact, kids' rooms are often the smallest and coolest room in the whole home!

If you live in a home that is 1000 sq. feet or under with a child (or 2, 3, 4 or more) and you and your family have managed to make the most of it, this is the contest for you. It's about celebrating family living and sharing inspiration, so we're looking for your best photos that show off your small space big ideas for your children's rooms.

We are looking for babies rooms (ages 0-3), kids rooms (ages 3-6) and big kids rooms (ages 6-9). The reader favorites in each of these three categories will be included in a final vote-off. The reader favorites in each of these three categories will be included in a final vote-off for prizes from the earth (and child) -friendly shop Green Depot.

We'll be accepting entries beginning Friday May 1 and will be asking for 5 photos of your child(ren)'s room...so get those cameras ready!
Any questions? Ask away in comments or send us an email.

How about a contest showing kid-friendly homes under 800 sq. ft?

We want to see how families adapt their entire space to suit kids, not just a single bedroom.

Plus, families in small homes often share bedrooms with their kids (or have their kids share bedrooms) which doesn't fit into your categories.

On the other hand, if this is just a contest about kids bedrooms, we're not sure why there is a need to limit the size of the overall home to 1000 sq. ft. After all, one can have a small nursery in a big home and vice versa.

Shared bedrooms are absolutely welcome in the contest and all rooms will be categorized by the age of the oldest child using the room (including rooms shared with parents). We're hoping to be able to feature a mix of ages, arrangements, styles and small space solutions.

I am disappointed that entries are limited by the size of the house instead of the size of the bedroom.

When we lived in a 900sf two bedroom apartment with just our oldest, her room was quite large. Now we live in an 1150sf three bedroom house and will be adding a third child soon.

My oldest daughter's current bedroom is about half the size of her old one, and the bedroom my other two will be sharing is not even as big as my oldest daughter's former room.

We are in the process of redoing the rooms, so no chance of entering them in the contest. I would just love to see truly small children's rooms (regardless of the size of the house they are in) for ideas and inspiration.

Well I am excited to see these spaces. Very few of the small cool spaces on AT include children. And even fewer include multiple children or kids older than five. I want to see how people get privacy in tiny spaces.

Well, Yolio, this contest is focused exclusively on kids' bedrooms, not the overall home. So it is unlikely to showcase how families get privacy in tiny spaces or how they make shared rooms (bedrooms, living room, hallways, etc.) more kid-friendly.

If a place is truly tiny, for example, kids might not even have a bedroom. That is certainly the case with our family.

The contest is designed to highlight nicely designed kids bedrooms in homes that happen to have limited square footage. (The rooms themselves can be of any size -- even large.)

It would be great to see a contest or even just a series of features and house tours on the challenges of family living in truly small spaces (less than 250 sq. ft. per person).
