I'm not sure yet what my absolute essential will be--my son arrives next month (!!!!) and this is all so new! A pouch sling! Of course it's great because I can roll it up and take it out whenever I need to pop in for a quick trip to a store (now with the hip carry for my 9 month old), but it's also great as a nursing cover (slung over like a sash) and even a changing pag in a pinch. It makes a handy burp cloth and has even been used as a blanket when I found myself with a sleepy son in an overly air-conditioned room in the summer. It's the most versatile thing in my bag! I wouldn't leave home without one!
