apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Thursday Giveaway: Designed for Kids by Phyllis Richardson

2008-10-02-richardson.jpg

Designed for Kids by Phyllis Richardson is like a Who's Who (and What's What) in kids' design. With over 750 color illustrations featuring the most innovative and best looking design solutions from around the world, it's almost like having having your favorite children's design blog (ahem) right in your hand. At the risk of losing a reader, we have a copy to give away!

The book itself has almost a textbook quality, but we promise there is no quiz. The 256 pages are divided into thematic chapters: mobility, nursery, toys, mealtimes, furniture, decoration and textiles, accessories, electronics and lighting and travel. Interviews with respected designers such as Gregg Lynn and Paola Antonelli are interspersed throughout.

Each entry includes a description of the product including background on the company or designer and lists the company's website so you can explore their other offerings. Regular Ohdeedoh readers will recognize many of our favorite products and design-forward companies, but will be introduced to many new ones especially from other countries. Designed for Kids is the perfect book for expecting design-conscious parents and will appeal to design lovers in general. You'll feel like you were eight again circling your desired toys in the Sears catalog.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below with the name of one product whose design you admire - for its beauty, its practicality or its innovation. Eligible comments must be left before Monday 10/07 at 5 pm EST. One winner will be chosen randomly.

Rules: Please, only one comment per person per giveaway post. Duplicate comments will be discarded. You'll need to be a registered member of the Apartment Therapy network of sites to post a comment. Make sure the email address in your Apartment Therapy registration is valid; that's how we'll contact you if you win. If you haven't registered yet, please join us here: welcome to our community and create an account.

Winners must claim their prize within three business days after the date of notification of such prize. A Sweepstakes winner's failure to respond to the prize notification within the specified three business days will be considered such Sweepstakes winner's forfeiture of the prize and an alternate winner may be selected from the pool of eligible entries. If an entrant is found to be ineligible, an alternate winner may also be selected from the pool of eligible entries.

To enter, you must be a U.S. resident, age 18 or older. Employees, partners and vendors of Apartment Therapy and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter. We will disqualify any entries that we believe are generated by scripts and other automated technology. When applicable, the winner may be required to execute and return within five business days an Affidavit of Eligibility and a Liability and Publicity Release to be eligible for the prize or an alternate winner will be selected.

All prizes will be awarded. No substitutions including for cash are permitted, except that Apartment Therapy reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater monetary value for any prize. The book sounds great! I love the look of the Oeuf classic crib, with its simple, clean lines and light wood. Alas, budget concerns dictate Walmart's BabyMod line - baby's first knockoff.

There are so many products that I love for design and practicality, Stokke, Boon, Oeuf...but I'm going to say Mally bibs. The leather is so easy to clean and the magnet closure is so practical, and some of the designs are pretty cool (my favorite is the bird).

I love the Twig blocks http://www.theopinionatedparent.com/2008/01/02/open-ended-play-with-twigs/ I bought on etsy... they are amazing... great for so many things and just plain cool to look at... It looks like Fat Brain Toys may be releasing them to the public soon... the etsy shop owner who designed them and made them by hand sent me a link to td monthly and if you scroll down you can see they are going to be released soon http://www.toydirectory.com/monthly/newtoys/newtoys_results.asp?pro_month_diff=6&pro_year_diff=2008&formType=advanced&age=0&category=26&price=0&gender=0&Submit2=Search&onlyvideos=0

I wish I had better pics of the possibilities with these blocks but from a design perspective, they are great!

My Daughter is almost nine months old and Stokke and Bugaboo products are fantastic. She has the Sleepi Crib, Keep wardrobe and a Tripp Trapp chair. All of these will stay with her for years to come. We also bought her a Bugaboo Chameleon stroller which we love, it has already made two trans Atlantic flights and is equally at home in Antwerp, London or our home Whitehorse Yukon.

I absolutely love Inke Heiland's Wallpaper Wildlife (http://www.inke.nl/index2.php?lang=en). It looks so great in my daughter's nursery. I ordered directly from the Dutch Inke Heiland site, rather than from a US-based distributor, since there were more pattern choices. So it was a bit of a gamble, but it was totally worth it. So adorable and everyone wants to know where I got them.
