Good Questions: Step Stool

2007-11-01-step stool.jpg Alicia sent us this photo and a question:

We're in need of a step stool that works with a pedestal sink. The Target special we have just isn't cutting it. It takes up way too much floor space in our tiny, tiny bathroom. There is no way to tuck it away. It's also awkward for my toddler to use because the step is almost too high for the sink, which juts out, making teeth brushing and hand washing pretty precarious. We need something smaller and less angular. Any ideas?

Without knowing the exact measurements you'd need, we do have a few suggestions.

The FÖRSIKTIG from Ikea is just $2.99, has anti-slip covers, and it looks like it's actually a bit arched so that it can fit around the sink more than a straight rectangular stool.

The other one with a slight arch: The Offi Snap Step. This one also gives you more height.

For style, we love the Pakhuis Oost Low Stool which we've posted on before.

The Rubbermaid Small Step Stool is cheap, sturdy, and it's light enough to just move or stand up out of the way when not in use.

Anyone else?

I second the Ikea stool. We have the same sink you have and the Ikea stool works quite well.
In the kitchen we have a Kikstep (you know the stool they use in public libraries). That thing is fantastic! We use it all the time and when my kids have something they want to do in the sink (like play animal swimming pool) they usually bring that into the bathroom to get a bit more height.

We have the IKEA one for my daughter's bedroom.

For the bathroom, we, like you, needed to conserve space, so we got a folding one from Bed, Bath and Beyond (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13990999) which allows us to tuck it away.

The only problem is, you gotta watch out for potentially pinched fingers. We usually fold/unfold it for our daughter (3 yrs old), so it kind of loses a bit of the usefulness in allowing some independence.

I got a great stool at Tarzian Hardware in Park Slope. It is foldable and it stores easily for us. My son is only 15 months, so we don't let him open it himself (although he is able to). It was $15. I can't remember who makes it and it's not marked on the stool, but it comes in bright colors (green, yellow, red) and I think it is mostly marketed for garage use.

I just found a place that sells the stool we got (and that shows the colors).
