Ariel sent us an e-mail, "Hey, Ohdeedoh! I keep hearing radio ads for something called 'Baby Loves Disco' and from what I can gather it sounds like some sort of disco for kids.
Have any of you attended one of these gatherings? I'm curious and at the same time, scared. Thanks."
Interesting question, Ariel.
Baby Loves Disco is a dance party for toddlers and preschoolers, as well as their parents. Night clubs and other venues are transformed into child-friendly places for a few hours so that parent and child can dance, socialize and party -- or is that par-tay? We're not sure.
According to the Web site, Baby Loves Disco is aimed at "...parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit let loose for some post naptime, pre-dinner fun. Make no mistake, this is not the mickey mouse club, and barney is banned. Baby loves disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real djs blending classic disco tunes from the 70s, & 80s..."

Currently taking place in over 21 cities including Manhattan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston, it seems quite popular but we haven't gone.
Well readers, have any of you experienced Baby Loves Disco? What can you tell Ariel about it? Is it hot or not?
Yeah sure if you think taking a tot to a darkish place with music blaring and lights going crazy. Hiring a sitter for a date night with your husband or partner is better.

I found it to be too loud for my 1 year old. It looked like the 4 year olds were having a blast.

I just checked out their website... Denver is a bust, I guess, as they can't find anywhere to have a party or anyone to host it. I can't imagine bringing my little ones into a grubby club to meet people and listen to music. I do think they would have fun being in a grubby club :) I didn't check out any of the other cities, but I have yet to meet anyone who has gone.

A few of my friends and I dragged our hubbies and kids and while the idea sounded fun, once we were there we all thought it was a little dark, loud and over stimulating for the little ones. I almost felt like it's meant for people who just don't want to give up their previous raving days despite the fact that they have kids. And if that's the case, I'd hire a sitter and go out for a night like that without the kids.
I will say that I saw a few 4 or 5 year old girls running around all dressed up in glitter and tutus who appeared to be having fun. But I wouldn't recommend it for babies or toddlers.

My 18-month-old wasn't in the right mood when we went (@#!%&^ nap strike) but I think he'd love it on a happier day. There's music, dancing, bubbles, lights, snacks, juice boxes, lots of toys and cushions on the floor...all things he likes. My friends' kids were having a really good time.
They clean the clubs really well before the event; the house lights are up more than usual so you can see that it's not grubby.
The DJs were really good and spun a lot of mostly-80s dance music and interacted with the kids. I'm sure we'll go back again; probably not every month but it's a fun outing, especially if you go with a group of friends who don't mind seeing you dork-dance to Let's Go Crazy.

We went when it came to DC and felt like we had be had. It was all about pawning products on us, there was okay music but nothing that you couldn't enjoy in the comfort of home with some friends in your living room, and the atmosphere was dreadful. Neither my 4 year old or 1 year old seemed to care that we were there, they were into watching the bubbles and that's about it. It wasn't worth the cost and in my book, there are much better and innovative kid-friendly things to do! Not to be a hater, I'm glad that they're giving it a go and there are options out there, I just won't go again.

For all us Canadians...
There is one in the Toronto area starting up called Diaper Disco (http://www.diaperdisco.com) which seems pretty cute! The Moms that went to others in the area (here in Toronto) loved it and it got a lot of praise in the newspapers.

I went with three friends and their daughters (Ruby Skye in San Francisco). For the older kids (3-5 years) it was a fun time; for the 2-year old, it was probably too much stimulation. The older girls had a blast hoola-hooping to the beat, dancing with glow-sticks, and playing with feather boas. Many parents dressed up in groovy get-ups and their kids seemed to enjoy watching their parents dork-dance as Laughing Sara described.
Once the kids were settled, my friends and I had a chance to dance and reminisce to old school music! We've not returned since, but it was a fun alternative to our usual dinner party get-togethers.
