Drew wrote us an e-mail asking, "I'm looking for a bookcase for my daughter. She's at the age (she's 12) where the kid's stuff is too kiddie and the grown up stuff, too grown up. Duh. Anyway, something that's simple yet pretty and she can use for a couple years would be great. Any ideas?"
Good question, Drew.
When children enter that 'tween stage, their sense of style is certainly apparent -- and they will tell you what they like and don't like. Cartoon-character furniture and princess themes are usually tossed aside by this stage, but as you've mentioned in your e-mail, grown up furniture often times seems too...well, grown up.
Enter PB Teen's Lilac Bookcase. We love the simplicity of it, with the "antique" detailing, that many young girls will love. The Lilac comes in white and a pale blue.
Readers, is there a bookcase you can recommend to Drew that you know a 12-year-old would love in her bedroom?
When I was younger we just had cheaper white bookcases (similar to the GRANEMO at Ikea). Target also has some cheaper bookcases. One way to make them a little more teen (but not childish) is to either find some cool patterned paper at an art store and wallpaper the back panels so a little bit of color peeks through. Or--just buy some bright paint and do the same thing.

I would suggest buying a solid wood bookcase second-hand and painting it in the colors she chooses.

LL Bean has a cottage bookcase both in horizontal and vertical - love it in porch blue - and very reasonably priced.
