Good Question: Green Skin Care

This is a great question and we've definitely featured a lot of green items for mama and baby here at Ohdeedoh. We're fans of Veda Baby, Babybearshop, Method Kid (not to be confused with Method Man) but our favorite is California Baby.

We love California Baby's Calming Aromatherapy Bubble Bath. The scent is amazing, it leaves your skin soft (It's perfect for shaving your legs, too!) and comes with a bubble wand inside. The best part, however, is the price. At only $12 a bottle, the Calming Bubble Bath is one of the more affordable green bath products out there.

What other green skin care products can you recommend to Gail, dear readers?

We like the unscented California Baby body wash and shampoo. No stink. BPA and phylate free.

You can check on the chemicals in any cosmetic item (including baby products) at the Environmental Working Group's cosmetic safety database. Surprising how many "natural" brands still have the same chemicals as the regular brands. Individual product pages also have user ratings and comments.

according to the EWG, California Baby is low risk (except for the hairs detangler, which doesn't work for us)...

We've started using Aubrey Organics baby shampoo. It has a lovely gentle smell and even better, scores a 0 on the Environmental Working group's Skin Deep cosmetic safety database (a really useful tool). http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/browse.php?maincat=babycare
We also like Burt's Bees baby powder and California Baby spf30 sunscreen.

The best moisturizer I found for a baby with bad eczema and incredibly dry skin -- after trying Ca Baby, Burts Bees, and tons of other expensive products -- was food-grade coconut oil. Wonderful. Olive oil works just as well, but is a bit greasy and smells like olive oil. It is easy to find, tho.

We also love California Baby and use their "Overtired and Cranky" bubble bath, which also smells great. The bubble wand is a HUGE hit at bath time, and there are 2 inside for parent and child. We also love their Calendula cream for almost everything - - scrapes, burns, diaper rash, chapped cheeks, etc, and they have great sunscreen, including one that comes in a handy "stick" for easy diaper bag transport.

We're totally sold on Dr. Bronner's baby soap--it's organic, fair trade, and significantly less expensive than the other green products. How's this for a green ingredients list: "Water, Saponfied Organic Coconut Oil, Saponified Organic Olive Oil, Organic Glycerin, Organic Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Citric Acid, Tocopherol (Vit. E)" At less than $15 for a 32 oz. bottle it's a great deal too. The only downside is it doesn't really lather much when diluted in bathwater. (It lathers fine when used full-strength.) But our baby girl's skin and hair have never been softer, even though we live in the desert in New Mexico!
