apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Question: Infant Floor Space

floornannyGQpic.jpgGeneviève from Quebec City e-mailed us and asks, "My son is 4-months. We put him often on the floor to plays with his "toys" on a mattress.

I'm searching for something much tiny but also comfortable than a mattress. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you."

Good Question, Geneviève

We love the idea of infants spending time on the floor absorbing their environment but finding the perfect spot for them can be a bit daunting. A friend of ours sent us the link to Floor Nanny and this may be what you're looking for.

Made with a 100% cotton slipcover that comes in a variety of patterns, the Floor Nanny provides infants with a safe and comfortable spot to relax and hangout in while in the same room with you. It's also portable so you can take the Floor Nanny with you.

What about you readers? What can you recommend to Geneviève?

that seems like a great idea! we've really struggled with this too as our apartment is all hardwood floors. consequently, i feel like it's taking forever for our little one to crawl. tummy time really is important!

I remembering seeing (on this site or another) a floor playspace that looked like a big red donut, but with an integral flat floor. It could have been 3', maybe 5' in diameter and the bolster circle kept the kid and the toys in. Anyone else seen this? I've been looking for it for 4 weeks now.

Another idea, funny but true, you could get the same effect with a dog bed!
Try a bolster-style or donut style. The good ones have fabrics that wick wetness, resist stain and odors and are chew-proof - double bonus!

Yes, those look like dog beds.

We use an old blanket, folded in half twice, covered with a baby blanket (or play gym thing) on top on our hardwood floors. Why buy something you will only use for a few months, when you have the materials already in your house?
