Good Question: Monster Plush Dolls

goodquestion-plushies.jpgBarbara sent us an e-mail, "My son loves Ugly Dolls and we have about four of them, and he like to add to his 'monster' entourage. We were hoping to add more Ugly Doll-inspired plushes so that we have a bit of variety, but still keeping with the monster/weird theme. What can you recommend? If they don't make me go broke it would be a big plus."

Good question, Barbara.

One of our favorite toy stores is Rotofugi, in Chicago. They have a wonderful selection of unusual and "designer" plushies, that are reasonably priced. We love their Little 9 and Friends Plush X81, by Jon Schiller, and their Verda Aquapod by Kika.

And of course, Etsy has a ton of options, including this Green Curmudgeon for only $13. Finally, you can never go wrong with a Domo-Kun plush.

What favorites can you recommend to Barbara?

There is a great independent Canadian company called Monster Factory ... their monsters are cute, & it looks like a lot of thought & care goes into creating them with personality.

You could try Etsy, do a search for monster plush. I bought a really cute one-of-a-kind stuffed monster on there for my son a few years back.

My son LOVES ugly dolls too.... while searching for "other" mosters I found these cotton monsters... We haven't purchased one yet. But I like them and they look fun! The downside is they sell out fast (which would be why we don't have one yet).

I super recommend you Giant Microbes,
"stuffed animals that look like tiny microbes--only a million times actual size!"

I was flipping through the Pottery Barn Kids catalog last night and spotted these monster-like stuffed toys. Apparently, they are actually a girl doll and a boy doll. BUT they sure look like monsters. $29 is a little much, though, in my opinion.

ModernTribe has Plushood plush toys that are handmade in Israel. They are like Ugly Dolls in that each character has a personality and background story to go a long with it. They were actually intended for adults but kids love them.

You could just make some. I suck at sewing and even I managed to make some monster/ugly dolls for my boys. I think the sucking at sewing helped to give them that extra edge... :)

We took drawings my boys did and translated them in to dolls. We then framed the drawings on the wall for decoration.
