Good Question: Nice Trunks

storagetrunkGQ.jpgLouise sent us an email: Instead of putting dressers in my daughter's room (she's 7), I was thinking of putting a trunk or two in her room. She could use them as clothing storage and as a table top. Do you have any cute trunks you could recommend?

Great idea and good question, Louise!

We love the idea of using a trunk as storage and a side or coffee table. It's definitely a way of getting more bang for your buck and utilizing all of your space wisely.

If you're looking for a fabric trunk, we like Pottery Barn's Lewis Trunk, $349. It comes in a nice variety of fabric choices.

Target's wood storage trunk is a nice classic, that is not a bad find for the price. It's on sale for $59.99.

Do you have a trunk you can recommend to Louise?

The only downside to this is that if used for everyday clothing, you'll have to dig through them to see/find anything and the items on top will always have to be removed to get into it.

I like that pottery barn one though!

Trunks are great storage. But with kids there are a lot of safety concerns. Trunks need to have the same sort of safety features as toyboxes. You have to make sure that they can't slam shut with the child hiding inside. They can't have any sort of lock or fastener that can trap the child, and you need to have the sort of closing mechanism that will stop at various levels to keep little fingers from getting smashed. And so on.

I have a Lane Cedar trunk and an old steamer-trunk, both inherited from my mom. The steamer is in my closet and has childhood paraphernalia in it. The cedar is in our loft under a window and has kitchen linens in it.

I say go to a consignment shop and see what you can find. Cedar is the best, in my opinion, but a funky old army-surplus or steamer can be repainted to match the room and still serve it's purpose.

ps -one day I fully plan on owning a vintage Louis Vuitton steamer trunk..and using it as a wardrobe.
