Good Question: What is Sustainable Parenting?

sustainable_parentingAT.jpgRecently, after hearing the term on the radio we asked, "What is Sustainable Parenting?" Well, not being one to talk to ourselves (very much) we replied, "We're not sure. That's a good question!" So, we decided to investigate.

According to Real Mama, Inc., "Sustainable parenting approaches child-rearing with an eye toward preservation of the natural environment." Taking its cue from sustainable development, sustainable parenting embraces the ideals of meeting the needs of your children while maintaining the balance of the ecosystem (or at least try to).

Emphasis is placed on rearing children to be balanced both psychologically and spiritually while caring about the Earth and stressing the importance of character rather than material gain. Parents teach children to be conscientious consumers, mindful of the decisions they make which can impact the environment, and basically instill in them a stewardship of the planet and compassion for humanity.

Do you practice a form of sustainable parenting? Please share your ideas and thoughts on this intriguing concept.

I think that's pretty much what we're trying to do. I don't like labels, though, and hadn't heard that one. But it's pretty accurate!
