Good Questions: Affordable Floor Cushions

good-questions-cushion.jpgOur good friend Shona recently stumped us with this question, so we're putting it out there to you, our erstwhile readers: We are creating a kind of reading nook for the wee ones, and I wanted to ask your advice. We have the ubiquitous Expedit bookshelves, and now we're looking for some floor cushions. We love the Fatboy, but not its pricetag at nearly $300. Do you know of any good alternatives? I've been googling away but so far have only found a crocheted (!) floor cushion from Ikea...

Do you have a hot tip on affordable floor cushions? Let us know in the comments!

You could always make your own. The cushion that you picked out looks like a basic rectangle, so even if you're not good at sewing, it's not something that you can easily mess up. http://www.foamerica.biz/bean-bag-filler-9c.html There's a link to bean bag filler that's at a really good price. And making your own lets you pick out the fabric that matches your decor perfectly!

I am not a big fan of WalMart, but they have a FatBoy knock off for much cheaper. I haven't ordered it, so I am not sure about the quality but we are considering it for the play room. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5799556

Oh - and I'm NYC, if that wasn't obvious by my username.

Crate & Barrel right now has lots of brightly colored, kid-friendly ones for about $36. They aren't the big chair-style ones like the Fatboys but still might work for you.

I have the Farboy for my now-five-month-old baby's nursery, and I have to say I think it's worth the money. EVERY bodily fluid imaginable has gotten on it and wiped right off of it in the past five months, and it is just beautifully made. I think my kid will end up taking it off to college with him-- I expect it will hold up great. Also, it does a decent job of serving as an extra bed for unfussy guests (so far kid/teenage nieces, etc.).

This may be weird, but I would check out the pet section. My daughter loves to crash on the giant cushioned pet bed that my parents have for their lab. Just look for one that is polyester filled (some have cedar chips in them to counter the stinky of wet dog...) The one my parents have came from Costco, and it wasn't more than $50. Sewing a removable/washable cover for it would be super easy and cheap.

I just bought a blue Fatboy Beanbag (smaller than the original, but still pretty big at 40" x 55" ) from the Land of Nod website outlet. It was on sale for $79 from $149 plus no shipping with code "COUPONCABIN."

Get 'em while they last!

Sorry- a correction to my post above - it looks like it's actually 40" x 50" and is the "Junior" model.

I ran into the same problem and found the Sumo Lounge (at $149 it is much cheaper than the fatboy) It looks the same though and I have sat on both and can detect no difference. My only guess (since they seem to be the same product) is that the fatboy is produced in Europe where as the Sumo is made in Canada. The link is www.sumolounge.com

I second the suggestion above on trying large pet beds. I found some cute ones at our TJ Maxx and Marshall's. They were under $20 a peice. The kids stack them and bounce on them and use them for forts. They're great.

I also recommend the Sumo- we have it in a hair salon I design & it has held up EXTREMELY well-grownups, kids & dogs all seem to love it!

This is so weird! I JUST bought a Fatboy knockoff in the UK. I bought it for my nursery as well. The only difference is that it is made with memory foam, which I think sounds lovely! If anyone is in the UK reading this it is from a website http://www.oddsizebeds.co.uk/products/cheap-accessories/memory-foam-bean-bags-fun-bag-product.html
