Good Questions: Any Real Difference Between These?

chairs120508.jpgSara sent us a (very funny) good question: This is probably the very definition of a First World Problem, but I'm trying to decide which chair to buy for 2-year-old Isaac to have as a flopping spot...

I've narrowed it down to these two options (shown above, PBK Anywhere Chair and Land of Nod Nod Chair), but I'm wondering if there's anything fabulous out there that I'm missing. I want to spend around $100 on this.

Is there any real difference between the two?

I briefly considered trying to build/sew my own, but then I reconnected with reality.

If you are familiar with the chairs Sara is considering, please let her know your thoughts in the comments below. Suggestions for alternatives are also welcome...

Have you seen the monte cubino kids seat?

We have the Pottery Barn chair and are VERY happy with it. My 2.5 year old LOVES it. We've had it over 2 years and it still looks great.

We've even had adults sit in it a few times- and while they don't quite fit- it has retained its shape well.

I love the look of the monte cubino online (http://www.montedesign.net/kidschair.html) - does anyone have real world experience with it?

I've had both chairs, and they're so similar. Both covers fade in the wash; both topple over when your kid climbs all over it or does gymnastics off them. You can buy foam inserts for them from eBay and not pay full price at the retailers'.

I had to throw the chairs out because one of our cats peed on them, and you know, cat urine is not easy to remove from those foam inserts (I tried).

We have both. Bought the Land of Nod one for my daughter because PBK discontinued the color I wanted. Both are fine but I would probably get another PBK, especially now that the color I want is back. I prefer PBK's monogramming options (different typefaces available) and it seems to be a little more sturdy and stable (but the other commenter is right...they both topple over easily). PBK is also bigger. My kids are two years apart so it doesn't really matter at the moment. The smaller kid has the smaller chair.

My two-year-old son has the PBK chair and we like it. Ours is a year old and it's held up beautifully. I chose it over the Land of Nod one because I liked the square back -- it was more like the style of our grown-up furniture. Turned out to be a handy feature. When the chair is pushed up against a wall, my son uses the back as a shelf of sorts. (Although mostly, he uses the chair to hurl across the room and horse around with it.)

We do have a pair of Land of Nod one-seater beanbag pods, and those get WAY more use than our PBK chair. The chair is designed to be a chair all the time, but the one-seater beanbag pods serve as chairs, pillows, tables, stuffed animal beds, pumpkins in our pretend pumpkin patch, obstacles for driving our trucks around, a "stove" when we pretend to cook food, footstools when Mommy and Daddy sit on the couch, stepstools (not a Mommy-authorized use, but a use nonetheless). Far more versatile than the chair, cheaper by more than half, and they are also comfortable for adults!

I saw a similar chair for a girl at Babies R Us yesterday. Very cute, despite the source. It looked a bit like the Monte Cubino but I didn't look to see if it had removable slipcovers -- probably not. It was $70. I say for a girl because they only had it in pink.

Do kids actually use these kinds of chairs? I never got one for my son because I just assumed it would gather dust.

When my son was a toddler, I bought one of those foam chairs with the plush Disney covers -- his was Winnie the Pooh, I think. Then I took the plush cover off and replaced it with a slipcover I made from fabric left over from the duvet cover. It LOOKED great but my son didn't really sit in it. Mainly, he liked to toss it around or use it as a fort. Sigh. On the other hand, every mother who visited said nice things about my sewing skills, so I did get something out of it.

My youngest son has the PBK chair and he LOVES it. Because he is only 18mo, I make sure it is up against a wall because it tips or he flies off it (He would most likely do that with any chair). Right now it is in his bedroom and is used every single day. I have washed the cover as the instructions say a few times and it has not faded at all. My husband and I wish these came in adult sizes!

We have the Cubino (won it from an ohdeedoh contest!) and I personally love it. I'd love to be able to get two more for my other two boys, but unfortunately, I don't have the funds for that. Right now, they're climbing all over it and sitting in it sometimes. I can't compare it to the other chairs, because it's the only one we have, but like I said, I really love it.

weve got the PBK chair. its great, holds up and washes well. some parents have said their kids didnt make much use of the chairs.. my kid loves it and uses it often. yes, its a bit costly, but i think the fact that you can buy several slipcovers and only one chair makes it awesome. you dont have to spend forever looking at a food stained kids chair. :)

We have the pottery barn one. It's a year old this Christmas and it's been great. My two year old uses it to sit in all the time. In fact he doesn't even like to sit on the couch with us, he will ask for his chair. It can tip over...but it's so close to the ground it's not a big deal. We back it up to the coffee table. This way he can set his cup or toys right behind him. His 1 year old brother would love to sit in it also, but this makes #1 upset. So Santa is bringing #2 his own chair this year.
