Good Questions: Dealing with the Half Empty Wipes Box

diaper040609.jpgSarah writes: Hi, I was wondering if anyone gets frustrated with diaper wipes containers like I do? I am using the standard white plastic Pampers box that I refill. The annoying part comes when the box is less than half full with wipes -- at that point the box is so lightweight that it doesn't stay put when I pull out a wipe. It's very tricky to deal with a dancing wipes box when holding the ankles of a squirming baby!

How do other parents handle this? I have searched (as yet to no avail) for a more substantial wipes box that would be heavier. Right now my strategy is to refill the box with wipes frequently, but I don't always remember!

How about adding something to the box (pebbles/ river stones come to mind) to weigh the box down? There is a bit of empty space in the box even with a full packet of wipes. I use the same Pampers box but this hasn't bothered me much.

I use Kirkland baby wipes (Diapers.com) that aren't in boxes but in soft resealable packs. That might be easier.

Get some sticky velcro tape at Home Depot or Office Depot. Put half of it on the changing table, half on the box and stick em' together! The extra tough stuff should certainly hold the wipe box down!

I am super picky about my wipes box. I have waaaay too many diapers to change during the day - I have two little ones under 2. Anyhow, I like the huggies wipes box because it has a silicone part that the wipes come through instead of the plastic ones. Its a heavier box imo too.

i received a wipe warmer as a shower gift and continue to use it even though i don't plug it in. it's a heavier container so it stays on the dresser a lot better than the plastic ones.

Ditto to what BeccaJane said - the Huggies boxes are so much nicer and make it easier to just get one wipe at a time. Love the velcro suggestion too...

I use the Huggies box and put Kirkland wipes in it. By the time it jumps when I pull on a wipe I need to add more to it.

:)

I have to agree with velcro or double-sided tape. If you don't want to buy another kind or a wipe warmer, then tape the box down. Taping it down can come in handy when the kid starts kicking it for fun.

i agree with star3, i add more wipes when the box starts moving around.

This is probably no help, but I use cloth wipes. I cloth diaper but was a hold out on the wipes. But like you I got soooo frustrated with a light weight wipes box flipping around while changing a squirmy kid. If you are at all willing to give cloth wipes a go, I can say it really is TONS easier.

why don't you just pull out wipes BEFORE you start changing the baby?

I use the same container as you. I just double up the bricks of wipes. It is a little tight at first but the wipes don't go flying. I also take the wipes out before a diaper change.

This isn't helpful at all, but I also use Kirkland brand soft packs (or occasionally Target or Wegman's soft packs) and they are also pretty annoying when the wipes get low. The same problem happens. I just live with it but get annoyed every time! Hadn't thought of pulling out wipes beforehand, I guess that would be too easy. ;)

We use the Huggies box filled with Seventh Generation wipes, I like the silicon thing - lightweightness isn't a problem but squirming baby is! I get them out beforehand, I have to confess. Partly because often either three come out at once or the next one is way down inside...

I take the remaining wipes out, refill with a new pack, and put the older wipes on top so they don't get really old and gross. It is a cheap way to keep the thing heavy without spending any extra money.

I was also going to suggest cloth wipes, if you think you're game. They're very easy to use and wash and very cheap. Plus they clean up messes soooo much better than the disposable wipes! They have enough heft that you never have the "too-light box" problem. Even if you don't go whole-hog and use cloth diapers, you can still use the wipes with very little mess.

Another vote for cloth wipes here. You can save a fair amount of cash by using them and they clean WAY BETTER than disposable wipes. We have homemade flannel wipes that I made out of some sheets and trimmed with rainbow thread, plus a lavender and tea tree oil spray that I mixed together in a spray bottle. The homemade spray is very gentle, cleans well, lasts a long time, and the scent is so much nicer than your standard wipes.

When my son was in diapers, I'd pull out the wipes beforehand (common sense, right?) and rinse them under hot water before I used them so they were warm on his toosh.
.
Ever tried using a cold wipe on yourself? (we've all ran out of TP at some point or another, amirite?)
BRRRRRrrr!!!
No wonder babies hate bum changes! The second I started warming his wipes first, he stopped fussing at diaper changes.

I've got twins and therefore change nappies quite often. I use cloth wipes, too. Works much better! Only for the really heavy stuff I take disposable wipes.

Wash your wipes and reuse them - it's also good for the environment!
